I forgot to share this one. 🥹This summer, my mom, daughter, and I made a trip up to Clayton, Georgia, for a girls’ trip in the mountains.
On the way, Reese and I had to stop at one of our favorite places – Marti's at Midday in Athens. It’s a special place to me because not only is the food fabulous, but working with Marti (when she was still in the Methodist church kitchen) was my first catering job in college to get some experience before I became an event planner.
Marti took me under her wing and taught me so much, and she later supported me in 2003 when I started my wedding planning company in Athens.
Several years ago, she had a very serious injury — it was critical. I painted a little illustration of her restaurant and sent her a note letting her know how much she meant to me. I couldn’t bear the idea of her leaving this earth without knowing how much she meant to me and how much she helped me along the way.
Then in 2020, Marti passed at the beginning of the pandemic, and I have never been so thankful that I told someone what they had done for me instead of waiting until it was too late.
Every time I see Marti’s, it reminds me to tell people I love them in the moment, tell them thank you right now, make it awkward if it needs to be, but be vulnerable and connect with another human being for whatever reason.
We all long to be seen and heard, and too many of us are suffering in silence, feeling lonely and isolated. Every day I ask God to show me someone to love, give a kind word, or just share a smile with —something to help people know I see them and I care.
Marti left that impact on me, and it’s one tiny way I can pay it forward. 💋
I did a little video documenting the process of painting this in my sketchbook if you want to take a look over on YouTube.
