Gathering in the holly...
Tradition and aesthetics have long encouraged us to bring in beautiful bits of green to help ornament our houses and keep a bit of the outdoors along side of us while warm and snug indoors.

The literal translation for holly is likely Proto-Indo-European (the ancient root language of the Indo-European languages) and means "prickly" or "to prick." The Druids hung it on windows and doorways to fend off evil and spirits.

Holly is also known for the brilliant red berries that stand out against the starkness of winter. It is associated with males, and is considered to bring men good luck and protection. The female counterpart to holly is ivy.
The famous English Christmas carol, "The Holly and the Ivy," reminds us that like all holidays, traditional foods and decorations tie us back to gathering in the best of what was available during the season of the festivities.
