🌸 METRO ATLANTA - IT’S TIME TO BLOOM IT FORWARD! 🌸

There’s nothing I love more than finding someone who could use a little unexpected beauty.

Of all the reasons people send flowers, anniversaries may be one of my favorites.

Because tucked inside the roses and ranunculus and all those beautiful little details is something much bigger: I still see you. I still celebrate you. I’m still glad it’s you.

Happy Anniversary to a very special couple. It’s always a privilege to create something beautiful for the moments that matter most.

🌸 Behind the Bloom

Today’s Flower: Pincushion Protea
(Technically, Leucospermum - but we’re among friends.)

Splurge Scale: $$$

Some flowers are soft and romantic. Some are delicate and graceful.

And then somebody brought this thing into the meeting. 😂

Meet Pincushion Protea.

Spiky. Slightly unruly. Usually sporting some outrageous shade of orange, yellow, or red.

And somehow…absolutely gorgeous.

It gets its nickname because, well, look at it. It resembles an old-fashioned pincushion with dozens of pins sticking out in every direction.

Except there’s more going on here than meets the eye.

🌿 Vase Life: About 10–14 days, often longer.

Another reason I love it: for something that looks this chaotic, it’s remarkably dependable.

✨ What It Brings to a Design

• Serious texture
• Strong color
• An unexpected focal point
• A little attitude among softer flowers

🌿 Did You Know?

Those crazy “pins” aren’t petals.

They’re actually part of many tiny individual flowers clustered together. As the flowers mature, their long styles extend outward and create that pincushion look.

And despite all appearances…they aren’t sharp. This flower is basically bluffing. 😂

🌿 Behind the Design

Pincushion is one of my favorite flowers to put where it seemingly has no business being.

Give me an arrangement full of soft roses, delicate petals and pretty little things… and then let me put one of these in it.

That contrast is exactly why it works.

I usually don’t need several. One well-placed pincushion can add enough texture and personality to change the entire design.

And inevitably, somebody points to it and asks:

“What IS that?”

Which, frankly, is one of my favorite questions to hear.

I don’t always want every flower in an arrangement to behave. Sometimes I want one that looks like it may have been kicked out of another arrangement for causing trouble. 😉🩷🌸

I never imagined I’d be announcing that Petals & Posies is getting a website.

Mostly because I never really imagined Petals & Posies becoming a business.

Flowers were part of my family long before they became part of my life.

My grandmother, Doris, owned Roller Floral on Jefferson Street in Bluefield, West Virginia - the little town where I grew up. My mother later had her own shop, Flowers by Debbie.

I went in an entirely different direction.

But when my grandmother passed away, I found myself designing flowers at home. It was a way to honor her. To remember her. Somehow, working with flowers made me feel a little closer to her.

That was really all it was supposed to be.

Then you started calling.

You trusted me with birthdays and anniversaries. New babies and final goodbyes. Celebrations, thank-yous, and those days when somebody simply needed to know they were loved.

And somewhere along the way, something I started because I missed my grandmother became Petals & Posies.

Now we’re building a website.

As we’ve been working on it, I’ve found myself digging through old photographs and newspaper archives from the 1970’s and 1980’s - finding pictures of my grandmother’s shop, old Roller Floral ads with my grandparents’ names, and advertisements from my mother’s flower shop.

And I’ve realized something I hadn’t quite put into words before:

Every time someone orders flowers from Petals & Posies, there’s a line that runs all the way back to that little flower shop on Jefferson Street. 🩷

From my grandmother, to my mother, to me.

And now, because of all of you, that line keeps going.

You took something I did because I loved her - and because I missed her - and gave it somewhere to go.

To every person who took a chance on me, came back, told a friend, shared a post, or trusted me with a moment that mattered: thank you.

You built Petals & Posies.

Today’s Flower: Gerbera Daisy

It’s almost impossible to look at a Gerbera and be in a bad mood.

Big round face. Ridiculously bright colors. Absolutely no interest in being subtle.

Gerberas come in just about every color you could want - from white and soft pastels to hot pink, orange, yellow, coral and deep red. And beyond the classic daisy shape, there are minis, doubles and wonderfully wild spider varieties.

✨ What Gerberas Bring to a Design

• A big, clean pop of color
• Very little visual bulk around the bloom
• A playful, modern feel
• Lots of personality from a single stem

🌿 Did You Know?

That big Gerbera “flower” isn’t actually one flower.

It’s made up of hundreds of tiny individual flowers packed together into a single flower head.

Take a close look at the center next time you see one. There’s a lot going on in there.

🌿 Behind the Design

For all that cheerful confidence up top, Gerberas have one slight problem.

The stem.

It’s long, soft and occasionally less committed to standing upright than I’d prefer.

So when one needs extra support, out comes the floral wire.

I carefully push a fine wire through the neck of the stem just beneath the bloom, then gently spiral it down the outside of the stem.

It gives me support and more control over exactly where that big flower face sits in the arrangement.

The trick is to support it without making it look like it’s wearing a brace.

Some flowers I’m willing to let wander, like tulips. I usually need the Gerbera to stay put.

Bright. Happy. Slightly high-maintenance. 🌼💛

🌿 Behind the Bloom

Today’s Stem: Hypericum Berries

Splurge Scale: $$

These little guys show up in my arrangements all the time.

And almost nobody knows their name.

Meet Hypericum berries.

Tiny. Round. Colorful. And surprisingly useful.

They come in green, cream, peach, coral, pink, red, and deep burgundy—which means there’s almost always a Hypericum willing to coordinate with whatever I have going on.

🌿 Vase Life: About 7–14 days

✨ What They Bring to a Design

• Little pops of color
• A completely different texture
• Interest between larger blooms
• A way to fill small spaces without adding another flower

🌿 Did You Know?

Before there were berries, there were flowers.

Hypericum first produces small yellow flowers. After the flowers finish blooming, these colorful little fruits develop.

So while Behind the Bloom is technically about flowers…

Today we’re featuring what happened after the flower left.

🌿 Behind the Design

There’s usually a point in an arrangement when I stand back, look at it and think:

It needs something.

Not another rose.

Not another big bloom.

Just…something.

This is often the something.

A few Hypericum berries tucked between larger flowers add little dots of color and texture exactly where I need them.

They’re especially good when I want to fill a small visual gap without actually filling it.

And I can change the whole feel depending on the color - green feels fresh, peach and pink soften things, and burgundy adds depth.

Nobody has ever called me and said:

“Michele, I’d like an arrangement with Hypericum berries.”

Not once. 😂

But they leave my studio in arrangements all the time.

And now that you know what they are, you’ll probably start spotting them everywhere. 🩷🌸

🌷 Behind the Bloom

Today’s Flower: Tulip

Splurge Scale: $$–$$$

I have a complicated relationship with tulips.

I put them exactly where I want them.

And then they do whatever they want. 😂

Tulips are one of the few cut flowers that continue to grow after they’re cut…sometimes several inches in the vase. They also bend and turn toward light, which means the arrangement you make today may look a little different tomorrow.

Tulips apparently consider my design more of a suggestion.

✨ What Tulips Bring to a Design

• Beautiful natural movement
• Clean, simple lines
• Incredible seasonal color
• A look that can be modern, romantic, or wonderfully loose

🌿 Did You Know?

Tulips have a daily routine.

They often open in brighter light and warmth, then close again when it gets cooler or darker.

So if your tulips seem to be changing throughout the day, you’re not imagining it.

They’re busy.

🌿 Behind the Design

Tulips are one of those flowers I’ve learned not to over-manage.

Their stems naturally curve, stretch and move. I can place them intentionally, but I also know they’re going to continue changing after they leave my hands.

So rather than fight them, I try to give them room to do what tulips do.

And there are SO many varieties beyond the classic tulip most of us picture - double tulips that almost resemble peonies, fringed tulips with feathery edges, parrot tulips with wildly ruffled petals, and some incredible specialty colors.

They can be elegant.

They can be dramatic.

They can be a little unruly.

Mostly, they’re going to do what they want.

I just work here. 😂

Today’s Flower: Bells of Ireland

Let’s begin with the obvious.

Bells of Ireland aren’t from Ireland. 😂

They’re native to parts of the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. The Irish connection likely came later, thanks to their brilliant green color and association with good luck.

🌿 Vase Life: About 7–10 days

✨ What They Bring to a Design

• Height and strong vertical lines
• Fresh, bright green color
• Great texture
• Structure without a lot of visual weight

🌿 Did You Know?

Those green “bells” aren’t actually the flowers.

They’re calyces…leaf-like structures surrounding the tiny flowers tucked inside.

And then there’s the smell.

Apparently, Bells of Ireland are something of a floral Rorschach test.

I’ve seen their scent described as green apple, mint, citrus, candy…even Skittles.

And then there are the people who say…cat p*e. 😹

I’m not sure how we got from Skittles to cat p*e, but here we are. You might want to conduct your own investigation.

🌿 Behind the Design

I reach for Bells of Ireland when I want to change the shape of a design. Those tall stems create a strong vertical line and pull your eye upward. I can leave them tall, stagger them through an arrangement, or work with their natural curves to keep things from feeling too structured.

And that green is surprisingly versatile. Whites and creams, pastels, bright colors…it plays well with almost everything.

One thing you won’t necessarily notice in the finished arrangement: they can have some surprisingly sharp little spines hiding around those bells.

So let’s review.

Not Irish.

The bells aren’t flowers.

May smell like Skittles.

May smell like cat p*e.

Might stab you.

And florists still buy them on purpose.

🌸 Behind the Bloom

Today’s Flower: Stock

Splurge Scale: $$

This is one I wish we had a scratch-and-sniff feature for. Stock is pretty, certainly.

But the fragrance is really the story. It has a sweet, slightly spicy scent that can perfume an entire arrangement - and sometimes a good portion of the room it’s sitting in.

🌿 Vase Life: About 5–10 days

✨ What Stock Brings to a Design

• Fragrance - lots of it
• Soft vertical lines
• Full, ruffled texture
• Beautiful color from white and blush to lavender, purple, peach and deeper tones

🌿 Did You Know?

Stock belongs to the mustard family, along with cabbage, broccoli and kale.

Which seems completely unreasonable when you smell it. 😂

🌿 Behind the Design

I like stock when I want height, but I don’t want a hard vertical line.

A snapdragon gives me a cleaner, more defined line. Stock is fuller and softer, so it can add height while also filling space between larger blooms.

And then there’s the fragrance. That matters to me because an arrangement isn’t only something you look at. Scent can change the whole experience of receiving flowers.

Of course, that also means I’m careful about where I use it. If someone is sensitive to fragrance - or the flowers are going into a hospital room or another setting where scent could be an issue - I may choose something else.

Otherwise, stock is one of those flowers you often smell before you know its name. And once you do know its name, you’ll start recognizing it everywhere. 🩷🌸

If flowers could make eye contact…

It would be an anemone.

That dramatic center has a way of drawing you in before you even notice the petals.

And once you do…it’s hard to look away.

🌿 Vase Life: 5–7 days

Anemones often arrive with their blooms partially closed, then continue opening over the next few days, revealing more of that striking center.

• Beautiful contrast

• Clean, modern elegance

• A natural focal point

• Delicate movement

Anemones naturally close their blooms at night or in cooler weather and reopen with the daylight.

One of the reasons I love anemones is that I don’t have to force them to become the focal point.

They already know how.

That dark center quietly draws your eye through an arrangement, adding depth and contrast without overwhelming everything around it. 🩷🌸
