⭐ The Stars She Left Behind ⭐
This 77" x 60" (lg. throw sized) quilt is a little different from the quilts I usually share because I didn't make this one. This is a true family heirloom, pieced by my children's fraternal Great-Great Grandmother, Granny Cox. 🧵❤️
The exact date it was pieced is unknown, but the family believes it to be a mid-century quilt, possibly dating back to 1940s–1965.
The story is that Granny Cox would buy fabric to make dresses and curtains, and may have even used printed flour or feed sacks. She saved those leftover pieces and eventually turned them into this beautiful collection of scrappy stars, as well as several other quilt tops. ⭐
The pieced tops were later found by Granny's grand-daughter, Martha, stored in Martha's mother's closet. Then about 20 years ago, she sent them to a long armer in Yates Center, Kansas, who backed and quilted them, giving Granny's unfinished work a new life.
It was then that Martha handed them on to myself and a few others. ❤️
There is something pretty special about knowing that every little piece was once part of something else—a dress, a curtain, maybe a feed sack—and Granny saw enough beauty in those scraps to save them and turn them into stars.
And while I adore this piece, I look forward to continuing the tradition of passing it on to the next generation, when the time comes.
