Dwarf conifers have arrived at French Prairie Perennials! They give structure and color year around to your garden. Get yours today!

We told you that it’s too early for annuals! Cold weather and changing weather tends to happen in April. Next week some perennials will start to arrive, followed by more in May. As a reminder, the ground is not warm, so be as excited as you want to be, but tender plants want warmer earth to grow in.

Be sure to purchase your Spring Aurora Sip and Stroll tickets online for May 2nd or 3rd.

It’s fun to see people finally coming out of the woodwoork to shop for landscape plants and early season perennials. We tend to hold off getting excited about presenting warm season perennials until late April/May. It is perfect weather for planting dwarf conifers. We will be getting our conifer order April 16 and additional perennials will start to arrive the following week.

In the meantime, our maples are leafing out with fresh new growth, unusual blueberry and strawberry varieties are blooming and don’t forget the garden art!

Gardener’s, don’t blink! I did and overnight, dormant plants have begun to sprout! New this year is Allium ‘Party Balloons’, drumstick allium and ‘Frost Proof Gardenia! We have a few Clematis getting ready to bloom, the black mondo grass looks excellent and our famous giant white calla lillies are emerging.

Folks, we like perennials to be planted during their natural growing season when possible, so we are just now starting to make some flowering perennials available for sale. We know you are anxious, trust us, we are too! Do remember that the soil in your flower beds takes a little bit of time to warm up.

Consider preparing your planting beds, putting out slug traps, fertilizing, weeding and laying down your mulch! See you soon!

This winter has had great opportunities to get outside in the yard. It is once again time to prune the roses. Also, time to clear away dead leaves from perennials so the critters don’t have a haven. Yes, you should come and purchase your slug traps. I found both eggs, adult slugs and snails trying to cohabitate. Get on them early in the season before their population’s explode. You won’t regret it!

W**d control is important to start now. Winter loving weather weeds need your action now. Have you turned your veggie garden soil and added some goodies such as mulch to make this year’s garden more productive? Raking up those dropped fir needles and cones is a good idea too. They make your soil pretty acid.

In the meantime, it is time to slip a few evergreens into the landscape. See you soon at French Prairie Perennials in Aurora.
