Our Trails are backroads you can drive...right into the heart of the most scenic region of Texas. First explored by the Spanish who came in search of gold, and settled by many different groups of European immigrants seeking freedom in the mid-1800s, this region was once the home of the "lords of the plains," the Comanche and before them, the Apache. Every historic cemetery tells the story of a community and historic cemeteries tell the story of a community in a way few places can.

Walk through a Hill Country cemetery and you'll discover the names of the first settlers, veterans, ranchers, teachers, and families who shaped the towns we love today.

Before fences divided the landscape, millions of cattle crossed Texas on their way north.

The Western Trail and the Great Western Cattle Trail passed through parts of the Hill Country, helping shape communities like Bandera and Kerrville.

Today's ""Cowboy Capital of the World"" didn't earn its nickname overnight.

If you've spent any time exploring towns like Blanco, Llano, Burnet, Bandera, or Johnson City, you've probably noticed a familiar pattern...

A beautiful courthouse.
A historic square.
Local shops and cafés surrounding it.

That wasn't by accident.

In the late 1800s, the courthouse was the center of community life. It's where legal matters were handled, where people traded cattle, celebrated holidays, caught up with neighbors, and built local businesses.

Long before concert venues and music festivals, Texas dance halls were where communities gathered.

Built by German, Czech, and Polish immigrants, these halls hosted weddings, community meetings, fundraisers, and Saturday night dances that often lasted until sunrise.

Many are still standing today, and many still host live music every weekend.

Places like Gruene Hall, Luckenbach, Albert Dance Hall, and Twin Sisters Dance Hall aren't just venues - they're living pieces of Texas history.

🌠 One of the Year's Best Night Sky Shows Is Almost Here

Mark your calendars! The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks on the night of August 12, and this year offers exceptionally dark skies thanks to the new moon—making it one of the best opportunities of 2026 to catch shooting stars. Under ideal conditions, skywatchers may see up to 100 meteors per hour.

If you're looking for an unforgettable place to experience it, head to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

Already one of the Texas Hill Country's most iconic destinations, Enchanted Rock is also an International Dark Sky Park, recognized for protecting its naturally dark night skies. After the sun sets, the massive pink granite dome becomes one of the best public places in Central Texas to watch the Milky Way—and, on August 12, the Perseids.

Texas Parks & Wildlife is even hosting a Perseids Watch Party beginning at 8:30 p.m. on August 12, with stargazing, constellation storytelling, and family-friendly activities. Be sure to reserve your park day pass in advance, bring a lawn chair or blanket, and give your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
