Light Source: Myrte Legerstee & Art as Activism
Myrte Legestree is a Dutch artist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Legestree works at the nexus of artistic expression and collective action. “Art can serve as a catalyst for new ways of thinking, prompting individuals to consider perspectives they hadn’t considered before. I hope that [my art] can inspire individuals to develop new thoughts that may lead to a change in behavior”, Legerstee said.
Art may well be a loophole, or better said, wormhole, that can transport us to a personal experience with the effects of climate change before it’s too late to do anything about it. In works like “What If We Had to Share One Toothbrush Because of a Lack of Raw Materials” and other works in the “What If” series, Legerstee presents works that prompt viewers to consider the consequences of our actions and inaction without the numbers and critical thresholds man have little time for.
“I have always enjoyed contemplating future scenarios infused with absurdity, as this approach provides a humorous perspective on various topics and makes dystopian futures more approachable.”
