The before photo of this living room looks much like the average living room, with some of the functional pieces already in place. What it needed was a cohesive color palette, plenty of personality, and some wow factor.

As you’ll see in the professional photo, I brought in all those extra layers that make a room feel finished. One of my favorites is the dark olive textured wallpaper on the fireplace wall, which adds depth and even more visual interest to the space.

After this photo was taken, we added a couple of rolling ottomans in front of the fireplace. Sheilia and Shai can move them wherever they happen to be relaxing, giving them a comfortable place to put their feet up besides the coffee table. We also added another C table beside the other sofa to hold a drink on those evenings when they want to kick back and relax with a cocktail.

I love how the colors in this room pop without taking away from the relaxing feel of the space.

Did you know that a well-designed room will often have five to seven light sources? Candlelight can count, too. Lighting is one of the best ways to make your home feel warm and inviting in the evening and at night. Layer your lighting and feel the room instantly become more relaxing.

This room features two candlesticks with LED candle lighting, a hurricane on the accent chest to the left of the fireplace, the ceiling fan in the center of the room, and this gorgeous gourd lamp in the perfect shade of green on the end table. Try adding layers of light to a room and see how much this one change can transform the way the space feels.

Tip: Luxury LED candles can be set on timers to automatically come on in the evening, and your lamps can be connected to simple timers purchased at Lowe's or The Home Depot. That way, your layers of lighting turn on automatically each night without you lifting a finger.

One last look at my client’s gorgeous custom primary suite before we move on to the rest of the home.

Layered window treatments bring both practical function and a sense of luxury to the space. I paired a sheer woven shade with blackout-lined drapery so my client can enjoy some sunlight while still maintaining privacy. The drapery provides even more privacy while adding insulation to the room. Framing each side of the towering custom bed’s headboard, the drapery also adds another layer of drama and makes a beautiful visual statement.

Here’s a closer look at her vanity in the bathroom. Check out the before photo to see the original builder-grade mirror and lighting, which we replaced with a luxury light fixture and a hammered gold-framed mirror.

We also added a chair to the vanity area so Sheilia can comfortably sit while putting on her makeup for the day.

I’ve managed to check off most of the things on this list, except for the travel part. My husband has a demanding corporate job, and I own a business, so traveling is something I haven’t done much of. My husband has traveled all over the world for business, but we all know that’s not the same as traveling for fun and relaxation.

To complicate things, has anyone else noticed that airports don’t seem to be as efficient as they used to be? Most people I know who have traveled over the last few years seem to have had some sort of problem with their flight, either coming or going. To me, that doesn’t sound relaxing at all.

So, my New Year’s resolution for 2027 is to take at least a couple of trips each year for the rest of my life. I want to start by exploring some of the states surrounding Texas and then venture farther from there. My husband wants to take me to Italy, and after traveling there and to Germany for business, he found both countries charming. Africa has also been on our bucket list. Our pastor is an avid hunter and has been to Africa many times. We would have the perfect guide.

My clients purchased a spec home in Sweetwater, so they didn’t have the opportunity to be involved in the selection process. They weren’t crazy about the shower wall tile, but they could live with it. What was driving them crazy was the floor tile. It was gray, but it was the wrong gray. In this room, it was turning purple.

All colors have undertones, and grays tend to have brown, purple, green, or blue undertones. Some people notice them immediately, while others don’t. Some undertones are subtle, and others are much more pronounced. Lighting can also play a big role in how those undertones appear. This bathroom has an abundance of wonderful natural light thanks to all the transom windows in the space. Fantastic for putting on makeup, but a disaster for that particular floor tile.

I brought in several other flooring samples, but I didn’t love any of them because of how the natural light reacted with the colors. Ultimately, I decided to use the same tile from the shower walls on the bathroom floor, and that’s where we struck gold. The result is a peaceful bathroom with just the right gray veining for the space.

I also suggested adding tall wainscoting using the popular fluted wood look, then finishing the walls above it with a warm, neutral Phillip Jeffries textured wallpaper to bring in another layer of texture and interest.

My clients are thrilled with the finished room.

Whole-home projects under 7,000 square feet generally take two to three days, while projects ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 square feet or more can take up to a week.

A Caracole dresser brings the wow factor to this niche wall in my client’s primary bedroom. This creative mix of materials starts with dark natural walnut, while the fronts of the six drawers showcase the tiny, swirling eyes of Birdseye Maple in a light, smoked finish. Stone-colored Micro-Suede dresses each end of the chest. The final unexpected detail is brushed gold metal embedded in the walnut.

I love incorporating mixed-material pieces into a space rather than relying on the oh-so-predictable single-finish furnishing. Sometimes simple furniture is needed to support a statement piece like this dresser. But adding one or two special pieces like this brings interest to a space and takes the room over the top. Finish it with beautiful wall art and candle sconces featuring realistic LED candles, and you have a beautiful wall.

The throw pillow is one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s toolbox. This simple home decor accessory can establish a color palette, create rhythm, and bring comfort to a space.

A custom throw pillow is also one of the more expensive products I recommend to my clients. But when it’s made correctly with a blend-down fill, a simple fluff and karate chop will keep it looking fantastic for years.

Convincing men of the value of a throw pillow isn’t always an easy feat at first. But once they see and feel the finished result, they often become believers in this fluffy, interesting little p**f.

I'm passionate about creating one-of-a-kind furnishings for my clients. This aligns with my philosophy that a client’s home should feel uniquely theirs.

Years ago, a client who hired me shared a story about a designer she had previously worked with who also owned a home furnishings store in the area. One day, she walked into a neighbor’s home and discovered they had the same coffee table she did. It was obvious they had hired the same designer.
