The inspiration for this primary bathroom started with the Pamir Garden wallpaper by Sanderson. By carrying the floor tile up the back wall, we created a sense of openness that makes this small bathroom feel larger.

We packed plenty of function into this compact space, with ample storage, a standing tub, and a shower. Our client had missed having a tub at home where she could soak after a workout or unwind at the end of a stressful day.

If you still subscribe to shelter magazines, you’ve probably noticed that many of them feature color issues during the summer months.

I think I speak for most designers when I say we get especially excited when a bold, artistic client hires us for a project. My delightful client is a painter and art collector who lives in Austin’s oh-so-original Hyde Park neighborhood. In an area filled with charming older homes, it’s not unusual to find interiors that push the boundaries.

We made this bathroom more functional by opening up the cramped shower height to create a more comfortable space, while also adding plenty of wow factor, starting with an Osborne & Little Wallpaper.

I love the paper-like lanterns that are showing up everywhere right now. They feel dramatic and contemporary without being cold, and they bring a beautiful warmth to any space. I especially love grouping three at varying heights, as you see in this image.

Lighting is one of the most impactful changes you can make to a space. It can even become the wow factor or focal point that brings the whole room together.

Trend watch: Plaids are making a strong appearance in both fashion and interior design, and I believe they’re here to stay for more than just a season. Plaids have a timeless appeal and offer an easy way to introduce a masculine touch into a space.

My design philosophy centers on balancing masculine and feminine elements so everyone in a home can feel at ease and comfortable.

This plaid from Stout Textiles also reflects my love of green, a color that remains a major trend right now.

Creating a sanctuary for your guests is the first step toward making them feel welcome and helping create lasting memories. My clients’ primary residence is in the UK, so they regularly host friends and family who travel to Texas to visit. Because the journey from the UK is far from a quick trip, guests often stay for extended periods.

To make those stays as comfortable as possible, we created two beautifully appointed guest rooms. Thoughtful touches can make all the difference—consider leaving a basket stocked with snacks and bottled water, or setting up a small coffee station so guests can enjoy a fresh cup as they get ready, especially if they tend to wake before you do.

This breakfast nook has become one of my favorite spaces in the house and was recently featured in Luxe Magazine. I always enjoy when clients bring me design challenges to solve. This table could only accommodate four chairs, but with a family of five and frequent guests, additional seating was essential. We designed a custom banquette that fits perfectly within the bay windows, allowing us to easily double the seating capacity while adding beautiful visual appeal. Its low back provides comfortable support for those seated without obstructing the view of the stunning pool area.

The final image I’d like to share from this primary suite is this view into the bathroom, offering a closer look at the custom vanity we designed. Custom cabinetry really shines here, since it lets us build storage that fits exactly how our clients move through and use their space.

Across from this vantage point, you’ll find a spacious shower anchoring the opposite side of the bathroom.

This is the sitting area I mentioned earlier. Originally, the electric fireplace sat where the bed is now, leaving no real option for bed placement except where I eventually relocated it. You’ll notice the fireplace wall is tucked into a niche. When the bed occupied that spot, there wasn’t space for nightstands, and the rest of the room went largely unused.

The room itself is long by nature, so it really benefits from being divided into two distinct zones to function well. By repositioning the fireplace, the space now works both day and night comfortably.

One more thoughtful detail—the chairs placed near the fireplace can swivel. They turn toward the fire when you want that cozy view, then rotate back to take in the secondary outlook through the two glass sliding doors.

Frank Lloyd Wright may have expressed it best when he said, “Form follows function—that idea has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”

When I reflect on that sense of a spiritual union, I’m reminded that every room should carry a feeling. It’s why I often ask my clients what kind of mood they want a space to hold—or what they hope to feel when they walk back through their door. And yes, that mood can shift from room to room, creating a layered experience throughout the home.
