Revisiting encaustic. This piece is a collage from some photos I took. The raven is from Colorado. The iron grate is from Positano. It’s a laser transfer and oil paint over encaustic and fused with heat.

I reworked an existing encaustic that’s been sitting in my studio for years. Literally, years. It was a brownish, rustic background with incised lines. I decided to see how the image transfer would work. I have to say, I love it. 🖤 🐦‍⬛

I have a tendency to keep going and going, overworking with a need to add more. I’m enjoying this process, but still feel like I’m missing “the thing.”

Maybe I just need to step away for a bit. It’s still very new, and will continue to evolve.

I do love how the underpainting enhances and helps guide the image. I painted the background yesterday, knowing I’d use this image.

More exploration using yesterday’s photo transfer technique. This is heavily textured watercolor paper, with a previously painted background. I transferred my bird photo and added colored pencil and a touch of gouache.

Do you ever have one of those days where it all starts to come together? You have to step back, take a breath, and whisper “holy sh*t.” Is this what I’ve been trying to achieve ?🧘🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🎨 🤓

I’m taking old daily paintings and I am experimenting with adding my own photo transfers. These images are not printed on… I’m transferring laser prints using parchment paper and cold wax. Luckily, it didn’t take too many tries to get a nice, crisp image. 👏🏻

Luckily, I have hundreds of dailies to play with. And, hundreds of my own photos too. Now it’s time to be more discerning with composition and background colors, so the chosen photo will have enough contrast.

I’ve never been much of a collage artist, but I think I can explore how the background painting might enhance the photo, and maybe try to tell a story.

- “The Walk”

I noticed a lady in my neighborhood walking her old pup. After seeing her more closely, I saw she was reading a book while walking her senior dog. I snapped a pic of the sweet moment, hoping to paint it someday. I’ve had so many senior dogs, I knew the love she had for hers. No rush, just a sniff for the hobbling, old sweetheart of a dog. The walk wasn’t for her, it was for “him”.

We lost our Roxie in December, and still miss her every day.

This piece still has some work to do, but I’m pleased so far. It fills me with both love and sadness, at the same time.
