Be confident in your voice, even if you don’t feel ready. Find mentors, stay curious, and take on new challenges.

→ What excites you most about leading the DC Metro Area market?

The diversity and complexity. It pushes strategic thinking while creating meaningful, place-based solutions. I also love building relationships and growing our presence.

→ How do you approach building strong client partnerships?

It starts with listening, then adding value beyond design, from navigating approvals to bringing new ideas forward.

From historic architecture abroad to vibrant interiors in Austin, Audrey brings curiosity and intention to everything she designs. She believes great spaces tell a story and work beautifully at the same time. We are proud to celebrate Audrey for Women's History Month and the energy she brings to our Austin office.

→ Project that reflects your design style?
"FVF Law - Complementing the existing 1948 building elements and working from the streetscape in shaped the architectural and interior moves. Consistent sightlines to natural light and a balance of visual weight through form and materials guided the approach."

→ What inspired you to pursue interior design?
"As a kid, my favorite thing to do was explore houses and see what worked well and what could be improved. That curiosity about how people experience space, and how design can create palpable energy, still inspires me."

→ How do you mix playfulness and functionality?
"Always consider unexpected or far-fetched ideas to push creative boundaries."

→ Which fictional space would you love to design?
"The Great Gatsby for the glamour, Don't Worry Darling for the timeless cinematic aesthetic."

Women Shaping Place | Ryan Smith

Ryan has always been drawn to designing spaces that matter. As a Project Manager and Architect in our Charlotte office, she leads with clarity, confidence, and purpose. She believes architecture should move people and strengthen communities.

Her leadership extends beyond our studio through her involvement with the National Organization of Minority Architects North Carolina Chapter, where she continues to advocate for representation and opportunity within the profession. We are proud to celebrate Ryan this Women's History Month.

→ What do you love most about practicing architecture today?
“I enjoy coordinating with the many groups involved in the design process, including the owner, contractor, consultants, and end users, to help ensure as many needs as possible are addressed.”

→ What’s a space or building that has always inspired you?
“Public libraries and places designed for gathering inspire me, especially spaces like public seating areas or steps where people can sit, connect, and watch the world around them.”
