This was my first model home staging project, and it’s one I won’t forget.

Model homes are a unique challenge. The goal isn’t to just design a beautiful space, but an aspirational one, on a budget. Basically, almost anyone should be able to walk in and picture themselves living there.

After some strategic sourcing and styling, a few of my favorite people came over to help hang and steam drapery until everything was ready for the first Open House.

The biggest distinction between staging a model home and designing one for a family? The latter needs to work with personal story, individual taste, and the details that make a space truly yours.

If you want to know where to spend and where to save, always ask: how hard is this to change later?

That answer tells you almost everything about where to put your money.

If you get natural stone, built-in storage, or flooring wrong, making changes down the road can cause an expensive chain reaction.

There’s a second thing to think about, and that’s extra splurges that would be difficult to add later, which is anything that requires opening walls.

Imagine Sunday morning in this kitchen.

The coffee is brewing, the kids are climbing onto the barstools, and there’s actually enough counter space to make breakfast without playing small-appliance Tetris.

Or maybe it’s game day, and the entire potluck spread fits on the island with easy access to the living room.

Those are the things I think about when designing a home. I want most people to be able to walk in and immediately picture themselves living there.

May has a way of keeping you busy, whether you’re ready or not.

I’ve been racing to get to as much of the garden as I can before the Texas heat makes that impossible. (The drought-resistant natives have not been loving all of the spring rain, but we’ll take it.)

On the project side, we’re in the middle of a few long-term remodels and new builds along with some smaller renovations and decorating projects (which have been a really nice change of pace).

Lately, we’re spending plenty of time shopping material selections, which is exciting for our clients and us. Can’t wait to show off how these projects will come together.

Some spaces arrive with a personality already intact, and this award-winning bathroom was one of them.

When I inherited the architectural plans for this project, the skylights and transom windows immediately became the foundation for every decision that followed. A floating cabinet design felt like the natural response, as it grounds the space without closing it down, letting the natural light and openness do exactly what they were meant to do.

“Changing one thing” never means changing one thing. Here’s what I mean by that:

Imagine waiting until mid-project to select your floor tile. It’s a beautiful choice, but that one decision quietly sets off a chain reaction that touches everything around it.

The grout color you already used in the shower might need to shift. The cabinet hardware you loved suddenly doesn’t feel quite right. That paint color you carefully selected? It’s up for debate again. And before long, even the light fixtures are back on the table because nothing meshes the way it once did.

This is exactly why a solid design plan from the very beginning is so important, because no decision exists in isolation.

The right guidance at the start protects your investment at every stage, preventing costly changes that add time onto your project.
