If you've ever chopped vegetables in your own shadow or tried to put on makeup under a single light above the mirror, you've already met the layer of lighting most homes are missing.

Task lighting doesn't get much attention because it’s not meant to stand out. What it does do well is make everyday life easier. Things like reading in bed, working at your desk, and cooking dinner on a weeknight.

This week in our lighting series, we're covering where task lighting belongs in the kitchen, bath, reading nook, and office, along with a few measurements to get you started. As always, those numbers are a starting point, and we adjust them to fit each room and the people who use it.

There was a day when we tried to match every wood in the house. Now, it’s all about contrast.

In this kitchen, the walnut cabinetry is intentionally darker than the oak floors. The difference gives each one room to stand out, and the warm brass faucet and hardware tie them together. Add a waterfall countertop with soft gray veining, and the whole space feels rich and grounded while staying light and open.

It’s this type of contrast that works together to create a timeless style that can work with almost anyone’s decor.

When clients start thinking about lighting, the decorative pieces are almost always where they begin. Which, of course they are, because that’s the fun part to source.

What gets overlooked is that these fixtures are also lighting the room. A beautiful pendant with a bare bulb can throw glare across your island, and a dining chandelier without a dimmer can feel awfully bright by the time dessert comes out.

This week in our lighting series, we’re taking a closer look at the decorative layer: what it does, where it goes, and a few measurements to get you started.

Just keep in mind, the measurements are a good place to start, but we do operate outside of these numbers regularly, depending on the demands of a project.

What would you take with you if you moved to a smaller home tomorrow?

A longtime client of mine is facing that question right now as she scopes out a retirement community. To help her, we went over and inventoried her entire home. Since we don't know which unit will become available, we're mapping out options for each floor plan, so she'll know exactly what to take no matter where she lands.

That's really where any downsizing move begins. Before anyone packs a box, you need to know what you have and where each piece is going to go. Otherwise, you find out on moving day that the sofa you couldn't part with doesn't fit through the door.

When deciding what to keep, consider what you use every day, what you'd miss if you left it behind, and of course, what will actually fit in your new place. (Remember to measure the doorways and walls.)

Some of the answers come easily. Others take a cup of coffee, a set of floor plans, and a little time at the dining table.

If you could dedicate one room in your house to something you love, what would it be?

This one is set up for a piano, but I've seen people make room for all kinds of things: a sewing and craft room, a yoga or painting studio, a home gym, a record room with a stereo and a couple of good chairs…any hobby or interest can fill the space.

I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t mind a planting area with a hydroponic system to grow my own lettuce and herbs year-round. With how much produce has been in the news this year, it makes it even more enticing.

Work from home? Here's how to find the right office space, whether you're buying or staying put.

Most homes built before 2020 weren't designed with an office in mind, and I've seen clients squeeze desks into closets and laundry rooms to make it work. Finding the right spot has more to do with how you work, than where a desk fits.

If you're on calls all day, you need a room with a door. My husband is the opposite. A closed-off back bedroom would drive him crazy, so he works in the living area, near the light, the view, and the dog.

Shopping for a home? If two of you work remotely, look for two separate office spaces.

Staying put? A closet, a rarely used guest room, or a formal dining room can become an office. If you prefer being in the middle of things, choose cabinetry with doors so your workspace disappears at the end of the day.

Save this for your next home search, and share it with someone still working from the kitchen table.

Welcome to part two of our lighting series. In the first post, we covered the five layers of lighting. Now we're going layer by layer, starting with the one every home has: Ambient.

Ambient lighting is your fill light, and it keeps a room evenly lit so you can see and move through your space. When it's done well, you never notice it. When it's the only layer, the room can feel flat and a little too shadowy.

Bunny Run is complete! This wonderful spec home by Rivendale Homes is in a special neighborhood and one of my favorite recent projects.

Every detail impresses, with beautiful arched steel doors, warm walnut, soft Venetian plaster, and soaring Texas live oaks outside every window.

It’s a home that feels timeless and completely livable, so it can accommodate any family’s style.

There's a light going into a project right now that's made in Ireland, and my first question was: could we get it wired to work here?

So I have a salesperson in Dublin, a time difference to plan around, and an electrician who let me know what we'd need to do on our end.

This is the part of the work that's changed the most. Clients have more options than they've ever had. If they don't see what they want in Austin, they find it online, and now we're bringing pieces in from around the world.

The house itself has gotten more complicated too. Last month it was a smart deadbolt: two different locks in one house and an app that needed to handle both. Finding out if it could wasn’t something we looked into ten years ago.

So my job has become as much about the connections I can bring along as what I specify.

The people we might have to reach out to during a project:

AV and audio

Security and cameras

Smart locks and access control

Lighting control and motorized shades

Network and wifi coverage

Appliance specialists for integrated and panel-ready

Plumbing, for digital showers, steam showers and drying options

Stone fabricators

Millwork and cabinet makers

Drapery workrooms and upholsterers

White-glove delivery and storage

Having a list of reliable vendors is gold in this business, but the trick is knowing when to call each one, so we’re not undoing work to build in some of the newest features in the home industry.
