The window seat: technically a design feature, functionally the cat's.

The designer reason we put them in: When a bedroom is tight, a window seat gives you a place to sit without adding a chair and allows the room to breathe. (Plus, some people just love them).

What actually happens: the cat claims it by day two, and at night it becomes the landing spot for the decorative shams, which beats the alternative of a pile on the floor.

They’re both good reasons, and I’d build it either way.

I keep coming back to this kitchen, and have to admit, I wouldn’t mind the two-tone “tuxedo” cabinetry in my own home.

I love how the darker cabinets anchor the room, while the white uppers bounce light around.

There’s a functional forgiveness behind this decision too: Lower cabinets usually take more abuse with feet, mops, the vacuum, and drips from anything going on above. The deeper color hides any mess or scuff marks between cleanings. Uppers stay white because nothing touches them.

Once school starts, the entry becomes one of the hardest-working rooms in the house. If there's no plan for where it all goes, it goes on the floor or in piles on the counters.

Here are four things an entry needs to make it to May:

∙ A seat for putting shoes on. If you opt for one with storage underneath, that pulls double duty.

∙ A landing surface so bags and shoes have a home at kid-height. If it’s at eye-level or below, they’re more likely to use it.

∙ Closed storage. Yes, you can go with hooks, but everyone will see everything going on. Add doors and the mess can remain out of sight.

∙ Durable flooring. Go with tile, stone, or luxury vinyl that won’t get damaged by wet shoes. Add a low-pile rug that can be washed or replaced when needed.

All of this can fit in a small area if you plan it right.

Color drenching is gaining popularity, and I have to say, I like it.

Take a look at this room. When you carry one color across the walls, ceiling, and cabinetry, everything flows together and feels calm and intentional.

Now swipe to see what it looks like with white built-in, a white ceiling, and white trim around the windows. With a separate wall color, suddenly your eyes stop at every edge, and the room feels busier and chopped up.

This kitchen feels a lot larger than it actually is.

By carrying the same color across the cabinets and walls, we were able to create the illusion of a bigger space, allowing the eye to travel without interruption.

We then brought in warm wood floors to add depth, so the neutral palette feels inviting instead of flat and sterile.

The neutrality is completely intentional in this spec home. A clean, simple design creates a beautiful base layer that’s easy for any prospective homeowner to make their own.

By the time you sit down to review your design direction, we've already put in hours behind the scenes.

For one project this week, that meant researching case goods for the bedrooms, pulling fabrics for draperies, window seats, and bedding, and hand-selecting carpet samples.

We’ll piece it all together in a polished presentation, along with tangible samples so clients can feel the texture and see the nuance.

Designing for a Texas summer means planning for 105° long before it arrives.

When we design homes built to handle the Austin heat, a few things are non-negotiable:

→ Window treatments that block the heat without blacking out the room
→ Ceiling fans that actually move air and still work with the design
→ Fade-proof fabrics that hold their color season after season
→ Deep soffits and generous porches for shade and outdoor living
→ And if the space allows…a pool never hurts.

Beautiful design should be able to handle the heat, especially when the forecast hits triple digits.

This home has something that’s landing on almost everyone’s dream home wish list, and it’s the first home I ever designed that has it.

It’s a prep kitchen, just off the main kitchen, and it's become something I recommend anytime a home can fit it.

The main kitchen is the one you see: it’s light, open, and made for gathering. The prep kitchen behind it is the workhorse. It's where the real cooking happens, and where the mess stays hidden when guests walk in.

It’s easy to come out of design school thinking you’re hot stuff…until someone asks you a plumbing question.

Here's the lesson that I learned very quickly: this work is far more management than it is design. One inspiration photo from a client can turn into a hundred decisions from sourcing, timelines, selecting trades, to the smallest details nobody thinks about.

I initially thought I had to have every answer myself. I don't. I can’t. What I have instead is a group of people I trust completely: the ones who do one thing and do it beautifully, who I've worked alongside for years.

So when you hand me your home, you get a designer who knows exactly who to call when I get a question I don’t know the answer to. We like to help create the Dream Team for your project.
