Before: a dark, dated mid-2000s attempt at a “Craftsman revival,” with a primary bath so chopped up and confusing that the first walkthrough felt like navigating a maze.

After: a warm, light-filled retreat designed for everyday luxury.

The original footprint was generous, but the layout worked against it: too many walls, awkward rooms, poor flow, and not nearly enough storage. Our clients wanted a true spa-like experience, so we reimagined the entire suite.

To reconfigure the layout, we relocated the shower (and added steam) adjacent to the much-desired soaking tub. A quartzite surround now connects the tub to an extra-deep shower bench, creating one seamless, sculptural moment. We extended the vanity for meaningful storage without overpowering the room, and introduced walnut cabinetry to bring a warmth that contrasts with the cool marble floors and walls and quartzite countertops.

Because the space gets intense direct sun, we designed custom mirrors to sit in front of the windows and replaced the glass with a frosted variety to further soften glare while preserving the light. Lava rock pendants add texture and atmosphere, balanced by discreet recessed lighting for an easy, ambient glow.

This was also an opportunity to correct the rest of the home’s flow. The laundry room was originally placed in the public zone, far from the private spaces, where most laundry is generated, so we relocated it to the primary suite and transformed the former laundry area into a powder room — far better for entertaining. The closet moved to an adjacent room, becoming a more generous, retail-inspired dressing space.

The result is calm, functional, and quietly luxurious: a warm neutral palette with room for the blues and greens woven throughout the rest of the home.

A finished space is about more than good taste. It’s about hundreds of decisions — and more importantly, how those decisions are communicated.

You all loved the previous post we did on this, so we’re serving up more! Should we make it a series?

The beauty you see at the end of a project is backed by structure, systems, and extremely detailed documentation.

Nothing in a room is left for (mis)interpretation. Every finish, placement, material, and detail is defined so the entire team — builders, tradespeople, artisans, installers — can execute without second-guessing.

While it might look like we’re just selecting beautiful things (or “picking,” as some people say..hot tip: don’t say that around me), the reality is we’re mapping out exactly how everything comes together in the real world.

This is where most amateur/non-professional/DIY-led projects start to break down: without organization, even the best ideas get lost somewhere between concept and construction.

Before we arrive at our final design solutions, there is an iterative process that ebbs and flows as each decision is made.

Explorations in contrast, materiality, and layered details test how expressive a space can become. Some of our ideas click immediately, some don’t, and that’s how the magic happens.

Design isn’t linear. It’s not a math problem with one right answer, one solution.
We’ve edited, simplified, and pushed the design further, bringing more cohesion, restraint, and intention to every detail.

These sketches, renderings and selections helped define the direction, but it’s evolved since then — stay tuned for the final powder bath design, coming soon!

I promise, it’s worth the wait!

I’ve always found ways to keep writing woven into my work. As someone once told me, I’m “a person with a lot of words.”

Early in my career, writing showed up in different ways, but more recently, it’s been our own blog and newsletter, which have become a great place to capture my point of view on design and the industry.

Long-form content really is where I feel most at home. I love exploring ideas more fully, sharing the thinking behind what we do, and creating something that’s both thoughtful and useful.

So this is a small nudge to join us there. We also share more through our newsletter, which you can sign up for on our website or through the link in bio.

Ever tried to track down a grout color, paint spec, or tile selection buried in a 47-email thread?

Yeah… not in this office.

When people ask what I do, the response is almost always: “That must be so fun.”
What I usually say: “It can be.”

I can count on one hand the number of times the response from someone has been “Oh, that’s a lot of work.”
My response: “Exactly. And you’ve clearly done a renovation or design project.”

What people in the “fun” camp don’t see is that behind every finished space is an overwhelming number of decisions, followed by a critical element: clear, meticulous documentation — the discipline behind the beauty.

A finished room doesn’t just come together; it’s built on clarity — every detail thought through, specified, and communicated so builders and trades can execute without guesswork.

In our design packages, every wall is elevated and every detail is accounted for — which sounds straightforward until you realize it means making hundreds of decisions most people don’t even know need to be made. Choosing beautiful pieces is only a small part of the puzzle; defining exactly how everything is built, finished, placed, and installed so nothing gets lost in translation is the bulk of the work.

Most DIY projects unravel because there’s no clear roadmap, and without a high level of clarity and documentation, even the best ideas fall apart long before they’re ever brought to life.

Designing light and bright spaces isn’t as simple as it looks.

When color takes a step back, everything else has to step forward. Form becomes more intentional. Scale becomes more precise. Materials carry more weight. And every piece has to earn its place.

In neutral interiors, interest doesn’t come from contrast in color—it comes from contrast in shape, proportion, texture, and time. A sculptural silhouette, a shift in scale, the tension between old and new—these are the elements that keep a space from falling flat.
The goal isn’t to fill a room, but to compose it. To create something layered, balanced, and quietly dynamic.

Swipe through for the principles we rely on to make neutral spaces feel anything but neutral.

When prospective clients first reach out, the conversation almost always begins the same way: how much will it cost, and how long will it take?

Fair questions, but they tend to overshadow a more important one: what is the value that will come from the relationship with us?

After more than two decades in this industry, it’s become clear to me that value in design is often misunderstood because so much of it isn’t immediately visible. It’s not just hours billed or the finished look. It’s the ability to see clearly, to make decisions quickly and confidently, and to know, almost instinctively, what will last and what won’t.

This level of value is built over years of experience, deep industry relationships, and a constant process of observation, learning, and refinement. It’s what allows us to guide clients through complex decisions, avoid costly missteps, and create something as enduring as it is beautiful.

And just as importantly, it’s found in the intangible parts of the process: the way challenges are anticipated, how communication is handled, how problems are resolved before they escalate, and how a team works together to carry the weight of a project so the client doesn’t have to.

That kind of value that’s hard to quantify, but it’s what defines the difference between a project that simply gets done and one that is truly done well.

One of the most valuable things I’ve gained over time is perspective on how I work with others. Collaboration is a skill, one that takes time, humility, and intention to develop.

It requires learning when to lead, when to listen, and how to trust the expertise of others without losing your own point of view.

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time sharpening that muscle, and what I’ve come to understand is this: the best work is never created in isolation. It comes from a team of people who are deeply knowledgeable in their craft and willing to lean on one another—challenging ideas, refining decisions, and elevating the outcome beyond what any one person could achieve alone.

There’s a rhythm to good collaboration. It’s not always seamless, but when it works, it creates something richer, more thoughtful, and ultimately more enduring.
