Finally got my bead put together and some art hung. My cobblers child house is always last. Still need a fluffy duvet but really like how the art grouping came out by just using things lying around the house. The only thing new, and not repurposed/scavenged is the headboard.

I'm developing a new course on living in the and I couldn't help but laugh when I put these two things together. It's amazing how many things from Science Fiction are either in our lives now or will be very soon. Welcome to the Brave New World of Design!!!

Fun observation...
You have to love a Texas weatherman. Mine was talking about winds increasing and said "winds are going to get a little feisty". Feisty??? Made me giggle.

Looking forward to teaching two great design seminars in Tampa and Estero, Florida this week. I will be teaching the audience of Florida Architects and Interior Designers about two big technology categories for residential design; Home Automation and LED/OLED Lighting.

Technology is being integrated into homes globally at breakneck speed with the global industry growing from $32 billion in 2015 to a forecast $78 billion in 2022. The largest segment of this global market is the U.S. and is being driven by both the Baby Boomers and the Millenials.

I'm so happy to be able to instruct design professionals about these new technologies to help them understand what is out there now, what is coming and how they can help their clients.

Like it or not, Home Automation is coming and the design industry will be heavily impacted.

I’m Bored!

I was driving this weekend and listening to NPR in the car. They were playing recordings they had made from survivors of the University of Texas campus shooting in 1966; fifty years ago. One interview really stuck in my mind. I apologize for not catching the gentleman’s name (I was driving!), but he was recounting that day and how before he decided to skip class and go hang out in a coffee shop that he had run across a friend and made the comment “I’m bored.”

At one point in time, probably every college student feels this ennui, blows of a class and goes and does something else. The modern day equivalent is probably Starbucks and Facebook. This particular man had his coffee interrupted by the shooting. Rather than stay in the coffee shop, he went out to see what was going on and ended up seeing a student who had been shot and was lying on the ground. He successfully dragged him behind some cars only to realize he was already dead.

At the end of the interview, he acknowledged the impact of the events of that day, every day, for the last fifty years on his life. He said that he has never uttered the phrase “I’m bored” since that day because he has never forgotten how fleeting and capricious life can be. Instead he has valued every moment of life in the last fifty years.

How many of you have said “I’m bored” in the last day? week? month? (This is excluding anyone under the age of 18 who sometime utter this phrase hourly as most parents will verify.)

If you catch yourself saying or thinking this, STOP!

We are fortunate enough to live in an amazing country and most of us have lives that the majority of the planet’s population cannot begin to comprehend. If you find yourself saying “I’m bored,” stop, take a step back and get up and do something. Preferably something that helps someone else.

This gentleman’s story carried a profound message, if we are willing to listen and learn. Live your life every day to the best that you can, savoring and valuing every moment and you will never be bored again. I know I will remember his story and will work hard to never be bored again.

Please note, this is not the type of article I generally write on social media but I was unable to get this story out of my mind. I figured there must be a reason and I hope by sharing this, I have helped someone else. Sometimes we need to look up from business facts and figures and reflect on life for a moment instead.

65 is the new 5!!!
According to a new release by the U.S. Census, sometime in the next four years the global population of human beings who are 65 and older will surpass those under 5 for the first time.

“For the first time in human history, people aged 65 and older will outnumber children under age 5,” says the report, entitled “An Aging World: 2015.”

“This crossing is just around the corner, before 2020” and “These two age groups will then continue to grow in opposite directions,” it says. “By 2050, the proportion of the population 65 and older (15.6 percent) will be more than double that of children under age 5 (7.2 percent).

“This unique demographic phenomenon of the ‘crossing’ is unprecedented,” says the Census Bureau.

The impact on the built world cannot even begin to be comprehended. Virtually none of the new homes constructed today are ready much less communities, cities and nations. We can no longer plan on warehousing the elderly in care facilities because there simply will be more people requiring care than we will have people to provide the care. The future of design needs to focus on how can we create a world for Sustainable Populations. What do you think?
