This is the part most people never see — and it's the part that decides everything.

LAVISH cabinets are built locally, by craftsmen who work the same way on every project regardless of material tier. But the engineering behind how they're built comes from decades of European tradition — frameless construction that's as considered on the inside of the cabinet as it is on the outside. The drawer glide. The hinge tolerance. The way the joinery holds over time. That level of precision is not standard in North American cabinet manufacturing. It's the specific discipline we built our fabrication program around.

And then there are the materials. Some of what we offer at the top of our range comes directly from European manufacturers — Austrian solid wood, select veneers — because for those products, there is simply no North American source at the same quality. We build locally with what can only be made abroad.

The result: a construction standard that holds across every tier, and materials at the top that can't be found anywhere else in this market.

This week, we walked through what a finish does before color, what color does before it becomes a genuine decision, and what a design conversation does before a kitchen becomes truly yours.

This is that conversation, finished.

A recent project: floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in the kitchen — the same finish and hand-fitted millwork continuing into the hallway, past where the kitchen ends. One coherent material decision, carried through the whole space. The color held its character in the first morning light the same way it did on the sample board.

One of the most common things we hear in a first design conversation is some version of: "I just want it to look right."

It's honest. And it's also the thing we want to sit with a little longer — because "right" almost always turns out to mean something more personal than the client expected when they walked in.

A finish that photographs well isn't always the one that feels right to live with every day. A color that's everywhere right now isn't always the one that holds up over time. Hardware that comes standard on every elevated kitchen isn't always the pull that belongs in this particular one.

We hear a version of this often: "We want something beautiful — classic. Maybe white or off-white?"

It's not a wrong instinct. White cabinetry has earned its place in kitchens for good reasons: it's timeless, it holds light, it doesn't compete. But it's also — for some clients — the default rather than the decision.

The question we like to sit with a little longer is: what color would this kitchen be if you weren't thinking about resale, or trends, or what looks right on a design blog?

Sometimes the answer is still white. Sometimes it's a walnut veneer or a lacquer pulled from a color the client has loved for years without quite knowing why. The point isn't to talk anyone out of anything — it's to make sure what they choose is a genuine choice, not an assumption.

This week, we walked through what it actually takes to host well this season — a dedicated space that keeps drinks separate from dinner-prep chaos, a pantry built to hold real holiday volume, and a powder bath quietly refreshed before the first guest ever saw it.

None of it was a last-minute save. Every piece was a decision made back in September, while there was still time for the cabinetry to be built right — hand-fitted, precision-milled, and installed without rushing any of it.

Nothing about a beautiful holiday season is last-minute. It only looks that way from the outside.

We hear this a lot this time of year: “We’d love new cabinetry before the holidays, but isn’t custom too slow for that?”

It’s a fair question, and the honest answer comes down to timing rather than doubt. Design asks for real conversation. Fabrication asks for real time on the shop floor. Installation asks for real hands, working without being rushed. None of that compresses well under pressure — but started now, in September, a project has a realistic path to being ready for Thanksgiving.

Started in late October or November, that same path isn’t there, and no amount of urgency changes the math.
So the real message isn’t hurry. It’s start now, and the timeline takes care of itself.
