Dimensions: H - 31” W - 10”

History:
Sculpted with cavities containing magical medicines (bilongo), they are activated by driving iron nails, blades, or pegs into the figure to seal contracts, settle disputes, or punish wrongdoers. 

A nganga (ritual specialist) carves the figure (often in human or animal form) and fills a cavity in the stomach or head with bilongo, which are sacred medicinal substances. The cavity is often sealed with a mirror, representing the ability to see into the spirit world.

The term “fetish” is a historical label derived from the Portuguese feitiço, used by17th-19th century European traders to describe these objects, though modern scholars prefer “power object” or “sculpture”.
