We tend to imagine history as a sequence of events unfolding one after another. But experience rarely works that way. Every act of attention is layered with memory, association, and accumulated time. The PIP series (a collaboration with Carlos Santana) proposes a different model: time not as a line, but as transparency.

Independent histories remain visible through one another, occupying the same space without collapsing into a single narrative.

The present is the only place where history becomes visible.
History doesn’t exist somewhere behind us.

It is always perceived from now.

The plexiglass isn’t “the present” because it’s newer. It’s the site of perception. It’s where looking happens.

The background isn’t “the past.” It’s the accumulated field that becomes legible only through the act of present attention.

This piece from our (CCYD Studio Carlos F Carrillo ) PIP (Picture in Picture) series brings together two independent bodies of work that seem to have been anticipating each other for years.

Carlos’s painted panel creates an ambient continuum—a field whose duration can’t quite be measured. My plexiglass painting holds a concentrated moment of attention. Rather than sitting in front of one another, the two layers behave like different frequencies occupying the same space.

After decades of living, making, and seeing together, we’ve realized our visual languages have developed compatible grammars—not identical, but capable of completing each other’s thoughts. The visible screws remain intentionally exposed, marking the effort to hold these different temporal experiences together.
