The Life Changing Magic of Orcas Island. Part 725-ish. Every year, sometimes more than once a year, we leave the world and enter Orcas Island. We stay in the same little log cabin ( #2) at our favorite 2-star “resort” and unplug. There is no wi-fi. No cell coverage. No tv. Not even a microwave. My sister says it looks like a sh*tty version of our house. This makes me laugh. Even though we always do the exact same things, it is never the same thing twice. We: 1) head straight to the grocery store and share the most delicious Stouffer Mac-n-cheese from the hot bar. We’d never eat this crap at home but here it is so delicious. 2) We walk the lakes, quiet, crisp air, mossy woods, soft paths. 3) We sit on the deck for hours and hours and the sound of the waves washes over us and our souls settle. The life changing magic of Orcas Island gives exactly what is needed. Sometimes this is tears. I don’t always know what tensions or grief or fear is being carried because day to day life is so busy. Sometimes it is pages and pages written about what we’ll do next: house projects, business ideas, ridiculous flights of fancy of “could and what-ifs”. It’s deep sleep that eludes me at home and an internal reset. And most of time, it’s all of these. Every single time. Magic.

Design Brief: Antarctica. Our clients were deeply impacted by the beauty of this place and returned with a simple request: We’d like to use the colors of Antarctica as the palette for our home design. Challenge accepted. Enter muted stone and blush tones, pale earth, icy water and of course, penguins🐧

Dragons in the guest bath. When we talk about delight driven design being personal and individual, a reflection of what lights you up, this is what we mean! This bathroom reflects a whole lot of “yesses” from our playfully artistic clients, a gluttonous feast for the eyes and a very personal joy to their souls. Happy Sunday!

“Captain Smith” is the name of the painted cement octopus tile that we built this design around. Instead of laying these as floor tile, we opted to showcase the irreverent pattern behind the floating white oak vanity. Textured blue tiles and icy whites are punctuated by unexpected deep red vessel sinks. The glass peppermint candy pendant over the soaking tub completes it.

Kitchen Envy. Our client called unexpectedly us a couple of days ago to give us the happy news that they had just received their occupancy permit. Whoop, whoop! They would be moving in and did we want to come see the house in its “pristine condition” before all of the boxes arrived? Duh. Yes!! These clients, building a new modern home from the ground up, were not content to be ordinary and we were thrilled to oblige and indulge. We began with a kitchen design featuring custom metalwork, curved elements, beautiful flat panel cherry cabinets and a gorgeous cobalt Aga range. A penchant for creativity, whimsy and humor showed itself in wallpapers and tile with: dragons, octopus, monkeys and space aliens. Here’s an iPhone-rough-pic peek at the kitchen. Can’t wait to show you the bathrooms!

Happy, happy birthday gorgeous!! Remember when we’d walk our baby strollers through Poulsbo and we only had one kid each?! Also, remember this sparkly party that left sequins in the couch cushions, corners and pathways of my house for weeks afterwards? SO much fun to celebrate you, then and now. Cheers to you my friend-forever.

“I was not made to be subtle” is emblazoned on my phone case. It certainly applies to me, but it clearly also applies to our unapologetically maximalist client, Jane. This powder room knows how to party. Chefs kiss Jane.

And with our final day and a half in Stockholm, it’s a wrap. Sweden, Christmas, 2025. What a trip. We wrung it out. Trains, planes, Ubers, ferries, ski lifts, air bnbs, restaurants, card games, coffee, whiskey, Harry Potter, cards against humanity, Settlers of Cattan, Svenskt Tenn, walking, pool, shopping, reading, talking, laughing, tears, Swedish meatballs, cardamom buns, sushi, togetherness. I’d do it again in a second. So happy, so lucky, to spend 10 whirlwind days in magical winter Scandinavian beauty with my 4 favorites: and Josie. I love you so, so much.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation: Sweden Edition. We found out on day 3 in Are that our train for the following day had been cancelled due to severe weather. Extreme winds blew in and warmish melty changed to blizzard. This left us in the precarious position of being “stuck” with no lodging (our air bnb had new guests arriving) and the question of how to get back to Stockholm for the second part of our trip. After much finagling, Josie secured us lodging and a flight back to the city. At this point, the burgeoning cold that I’m sure I caught on the plane had kicked into high gear and I sat it out in a coffee shop with a view of the incredible weather as the kids braved the slopes. Run after run was shut down due to the winds but no one could accuse us of not squeezing every bit of skiing out of this trip! The next day we took a much needed do-nothing day sitting out the storm that involved Settlers of Cattan and the goal of watching all of the Harry Potter movies. Our 40 minute flight to Stockholm brought us back with 2 days less than planned. So much we want to do, so little time!

Merry Christmas! We started the usual way: opening gifts of matching sweaters from nana, Christmas pjs and small, thoughtful, packable gifts. Josie gifted us walkie talkies which came in extremely handy for@meeting back up after the repeated falling off the tow rope that happened halfway up the hill multiple times yesterday. The temp rose equaling some snow melt so many runs were closed. We braved it. The wind was so strong at the top that we had to literally push ourselves downhill. This was fine with me since the easier runs that we were looking for were closed (we found this out at the TOP of the mountain) and I needed all the help I could get. As we sat around eating Swedish meatballs in a slope side restaurant afterwards I thought that this day could not have been more memorable. I can hear my grown up kids laughing from the sauna as I write this. 🇸🇪
