Mango doesn't care summer is over. As long as a ball is involved, she's happy everywhere. The pine pitch is slowly wearing off her face.

A beauty of lamp from the UNITED STATES looking perfectly restored compared with originals onboard the ship.

As long-time Nautiques friend Rick reports from Virginia, a complicated repair was made easy:
Hello Don, several years ago I bought from Nautiques (at a very reasonable price) this significant SS United States lamp. It was sold in "as is condition", with no wiring, no shade and the usual broken shade bracket.

After years of procrastination and trying to figure a way to work around the broken shade bracket - I decided to go this route rather than wait forever. I had the lamp professionally rewired, and spotted a suitable shade and finial at Home Depot recently. Even the original bulb sockets remain intact. So other than a small drilled hole to facilitate a finial shade frame, no other harm was done to the historical figure of the lamp.

Now this lamp proudly lights my new ship room I am finally getting around to working on as well. Many, many happy Nautiques purchases over the years are on show in this room dedicated to US Lines.

Looks great Rick, and thanks for sharing!

I've been building up a supply of UNITED STATES china, glassware, and objects in preparation for the 70th anniversary of the maiden voyage this July.

Then I decided, why wait? So I'm offering it all today so you can stock up for your own celebrations come July 4.

Sincerely,
Don

In the news today, a tale of two QUEENS ...

French multinational hospitality company Accor is taking over the Hotel QE2 in Dubai to add to its portfolio of 5,300 locations in 110 countries with 777,714 rooms.

Accor will update and rebrand the ship. Once the renovation is complete, the new MGallery Queen Elizabeth 2 will feature 447 hotel rooms, nine food & beverage outlets, ten meeting rooms, 5,620sqm area for outdoor events, six retail outlets, a swimming pool and a gym.

And then there is the poor QUEEN MARY, rusting away and in danger of being holed by a Russian sub. The City of Long Beach has taken her over again but projected renovation costs upwards of half-a-billion dollars makes her future uncertain. Her historic but rotting lifeboats have been removed and chucked.

This week I am featuring items from both QUEENS.

Sincerely,
Don

The ultra-luxurious Trouville Suite on the incomparable NORMANDIE ...

That and her sisters suites - Deauville, Caen, and Rouen - are the accommodations of choice as we dial back the time machine to the 1930s. After all, if we are going to time travel, we may as well book the best.

If your time machine is on the fritz, no worries. This week I am offering several pieces of tableware only found in those suites of royalty, movie stars, and millionaires.

Sincerely,
Don

"I need a good book to read."

From my teenage years onward I would frequently ask my dad that question. He could always dig up something interesting from his bookshelves.

Passengers on Cunard's FRANCONIA in the 1920s could visit this A Deck Foyer Library for suitable reading material while sailing on those long, leisurely world cruises the ship was famous for.

This week I'm offering a selection of books aimed at ship lovers like you. You'll find ship histories and reference books, plus five books I plucked off shelves that I enjoyed for casual reading. I thought you might too.

Sincerely,
Don
