I have always been drawn to a four-poster, technically, it isn't a headboard at all; it's the whole frame. The style goes back centuries, when the posts held curtains for warmth and a little privacy, and even though we don't need that anymore, the height and the presence never went out of style. I almost always find mine secondhand, and ours is a good example. I found it at a consignment shop here in Baltimore and fell for the clean lines, it turned out to be signed by Steven Swift, a furniture maker who ran a family workshop on Nantucket for decades. That's why I almost always go antique. I'd rather find an old frame with real patina at a consignment shop or antique store than buy something new trying to imitate it. Before this room was pretty, it was a stack of elevations. Every little detail, worked out on paper long before anyone picked fabric.

That's the part people don't usually see. This one started as a pretty classic Ralph Lauren idea in my head, and somewhere in the drawings it turned into something a little more unexpected. The ceiling ended up carrying more of the room than I planned for, and I'm glad it did, that's usually how the good rooms go. You plan for one thing and the room tells you what it actually wants to be. More on this one soon!!

Last fall I dug up our hostas because I hadn't had peonies bloom in three years, I genuinely wasn't sure anything would come back. Then this spring the blooms showed up, and I just stood there in the yard for a minute.

Fall in Maryland always feels like that same kind of shift. Summer winds down, the house finds its rhythm again, the studio's busy season picks back up, and there's a version of fall I lo
ok forward to every single year. A little throwback to one of my favorite homes as we settle into it.

There are so many beautiful ways to gather inspiration for a project. Travel, design books, an afternoon in a museum, a Sunday farmers market, the list goes on! But one of my biggest inspirations comes from my very own backyard, right here in Baltimore.

Billy Baldwin, widely considered one of the fathers of American interior design was born and raised in Baltimore, the city I’m lucky to call home, before he ever made his name in New York. He is one of my all-time favorites, and he had a famous room done in Arbre de Matisse, the Quadrille print.

So when I designed my own home, I wanted to pay a little homage to him. That same pattern now lives in my laundry room, and honestly, it might be my favorite corner in the whole house. A daily reminder of where great design comes from, and of the city that shaped one of its greats. And don’t be surprised if you see Arbre de Matisse somewhere in my next house, too.

I have a book called The Design Directory of Bedding, hundreds of pages of headboard shapes going back decades. I do not follow it exactly, but I go back to it often, the same way I go back to Billy Baldwin's Arbor de Matisse room from a 1965 Vogue feature, which I loved enough to bring into my own laundry room.

That is really the point. Even when a headboard is fully custom, it still comes from somewhere. Scalloped, square, curved, cannonball, four-poster, these are the shapes I return to most, and each one sets a different tone before you get to anything else in the room. A before-and-after doesn't always tell you the part that matters most: the time and dedication. The sourcing and the sampling, the plans drawn and redrawn, the dozens of small decisions behind a single room, each one made with care. A finished space can look effortless, but every inch of it was considered, measured, and carefully designed into place. Our attention to detail is what the reveal may not show, but it is exactly what makes a home feel like yours.

People get nervous about mixing pattern, and I understand why, because it feels easy to get wrong. But layering is one of my favorite parts of a room, and it is simpler than it looks once you have a system. I start with one piece I love and let it lead. In this room that was a single pillow, and every other color came out of it. From there I coordinate instead of match, because matching falls flat and coordinating is what makes a space feel collected. I let color be the thread that ties everything together, then I mix the scale and the shape, pairing a larger pattern with a smaller one and a curve with a straight line. And I always leave the eye somewhere to rest with a few quiet solids, so the patterns I love actually get to stand out. Function matters here too. We chose a round brass coffee table for this room so we could move around easily, and added a glass table to keep a smaller space feeling open.

We spent a day this summer painting alongside Sarah Hannah (Sarah Hanna) of Art in Residence, and it might be one of my favorite things we've ever done as a family. Six hours, start to finish, all of us with a brush in hand. Every piece of it means something, we include a white marlin for my husband, who's fished for them his whole life and is actually how we met, a lacrosse stick tucked into the flowers, a sandpiper, because I've always loved watching them on the beach, and a basketball for one of the boys. It's going to hang in our beach house, and every time I look at it I'll remember the whole family in the kitchen, elbow deep in paint, making something together. This is why I love bringing art into a home, it's not just decoration on a wall, this was a whole day, a whole story, hanging where you'll see it every morning.

I am a traditionalist at heart. I love draperies, custom rugs, antiques, inset cabinetry, and millwork. But traditional does not have to be heavy or stuffy, and my version is meant to feel fresh and easy to live in. The best way I can explain it is to show you the details I come back to in every home. A warm white that does not read white. Marble that I choose knowing it will etch and patina, because that is what gives it character over time. Inset cabinetry and custom millwork that feel built into the house instead of added on. A custom rug grounded by a few real antiques, so the new pieces feel like they have always been there. That mix is classic modern. Looking back at the things that last, and designing them for the way you actually live right now.
