Art as life allows it by Rick Hanscom

About the Artist
Art as life allows it
Reality to me has always been suggestive.
I have found if you can find a way to feel anything besides what is right in front of you, you could live in a dream. Art has been a way of doing this for me.
When I paint, I no longer exist in this world. Being completely consumed by what I am creating, I lose touch with everything else around me.
Emotions now only exist in their rawest form. My name is Richard Hanscom. I was born in New Hampshire and have also been to a few other places in the United States, but Maine is where I have spent most of my life and in many ways will always be my home.
Painting is something I found later on in my life. I never knew just how much I would fall in love with it. There are several things I use to paint on: glass, panel board, canvas, and canvas panel. They all have their differences that I use as a way to create.
Oil paint is what I primarily choose to use on these mediums.
Penwork is something else I have fallen for. It brings out another side of me I pursue just as intently.
Growing up for me was a bit chaotic, never thinking of art until much later in my life. I think I found it exactly when I needed to. It is something that helps me so much in so many ways, and it is my honor to share that with all of you.

/ 8/1

My name is Samantha Grimwood, I am a practicing artist and curator.
I exist in two forms within the creative realm, there is the artist who creates and the curator who curates. These forms exist in tandem and inform and shape the other. As an artist I experiment with many mediums. My interest in a material or medium starts the creative process. Working with it encourages the want to understand its origin and experiment with the way it is situated in the current dialogues of contemporary art. My creative process evolves with my practice as my interests shift. The context of the works explore the reality that they exist in but pose questions for the viewer to ponder in their experience with the work. In this place of questioning I, as the artist and curator, act as a witness to the dialogue of the work in relation to the viewer and its space.

A bio from Sea Witch by Kristie
“Sea Witch, a book of photography and poetry by Maine native, Kristic Billings - images and words of the sea, nature, folk art, dolls, loss, grief, love, acceptance, rage, music, life.
From punk rock to menopause to swimming with seals! A middle-aged story of a Sea Witch.
A great lover of music, of art, and life, Kristie is drawn to beauty, even in the most ordinary, mundane way. She is drawn to what others may pass by, unnoticed.
Kristie has worn many hats over the years. She is a
long time Saturday night DJ on Community Radio, WERU 89.9 FM, in Orland, Maine. From small town grocery clerk, to making tie dye t-shirts for the local import shop, sometimes working at a fish market, or selling men’s suits, she owned her own shoe store. She has been an Arts Educator at a local theater, and lobster fisher, barista, and antique seller.
Kristie is a collector. Of stories, of emotions, of dolls, of feelings, wigs, mannequin parts, record albums, memories, beauty, laughter, vintage clothing, scallop shells, barnacles, hermit crabs. She is an observer. She’s been writing poetry since childhood, beginning with her love of Edna St.Vincent Millay to the Beat poets, Bukowski, and beyond. As for photography, she has been taking pictures for years with an old Nikon, and has proceeded to collect more cameras since then.
She is drawn with awe to the artists that may make you uncomfortable.”

The Journey
An Exhibition by Alexis Price

The Journey brings together a vibrant collection of paintings by artist Alexis Price, marking her first solo exhibition in Maine since relocating from New York City in 2020.
Through powerful portraits of beastly goddesses and emotionally charged narratives, Price delves into the profound weight of what we carry as humans. She examines the roles of motherhood, experiences of desire and moments of loss and translates them into universal expressions of female empowerment and messages of resilience.
This body of work, which spans the past several years of Price's life, offers an intimate exploration of identity, navigating the spiritual stepping stones of awakening, trauma, enlightenment and rebirth. By visually exploring these subjects, viewers are invited into a shared experience of profound transformation. Price's background in dance also influences her figurative work, with each figure displaying a deep sense of emotion through movement. Through compelling emotional truths woven into each piece, The Joumey invites you to witness the beauty of becoming oneself over and over again....
