📍 Site visit | Market Square, Henrietta, NY

What looks like an empty space to some is a whole lot of information to us. 👀

Today’s site visit was all about documenting the existing conditions and getting a clear understanding of the space before design work moves forward. It may not be the most glamorous part of the process, but it is one of the most important.

Accurate existing conditions documentation gives our team the foundation we need to develop a design that works with the space as it actually exists, helping turn our client’s vision into reality as smoothly as possible.

So, what do you think is coming next for this space?

Take your best guess. We’ll be back to show you. 👀

Making room for what comes next. 🌿

There’s a lot happening outside Mix Place right now.

At the tenant entrance, a large carriage stone is being carefully relocated about six feet, while the existing flagstone walkway is being lifted and rearranged to create a more level, intentional approach.

Around the back basement entrance, we’re preparing the site for a new flagstone patio and thoughtful landscaping that will create a natural buffer between the two areas.

It may look a little like organized chaos right now, but every stone is being moved with the finished space in mind. The goal is a landscape that feels like it has always belonged here, while making the entrances more functional and welcoming.

From neglected to nearly complete.

The upstairs bathroom at Mix Place has come a long way.

The first photo shows where we started: a tired, dilapidated space with plenty of history, but not much left to suggest what it could become. The second captures the renovation in its most unglamorous phase: stripped back to the bones and ready for a new chapter.

And now, we're about 99% there.

The original emerald green wall tile was carefully restored rather than replaced, and new flooring, wall tile, fixtures, and finishes have brought the room back to life while keeping its character intact.

A good renovation doesn't always mean starting over. Sometimes it's about seeing what is worth saving, figuring out what needs to change, and bringing the two together.

Okay, we’re officially squealing.

The kitchen backsplash tile went up over the weekend, and suddenly we can see the design coming together in a whole new way.

It’s not grouted yet. There’s still a little construction clutter hanging around. And we’re about as far from a styled kitchen photoshoot as you can get.

But even in this in-between moment, it is stunning.

After months of watching this kitchen evolve from an idea on paper to a space taking shape, seeing these final layers of color, texture, and pattern come together is pretty exciting.

We’re not quite ready for the finished reveal yet, but we’re very, very happy with where this is headed. 💚

Celery is having a moment. 🌱

Sherwin-Williams has named Celery SW 6421 its 2027 Color of the Year, and while we know this optimistic yellow-green may not be everyone's first choice, we're intrigued by what it brings to a space.

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about it. Celery feels familiar without feeling dated, bringing together the warmth of yellow and the restorative quality of green in a way that feels both playful and comforting.

And that's what we love about color. We don't have to love a color on its own to see where it could work. The right application, pairing, material, or unexpected accent can completely change the way we experience it.

So, Celery... we're curious. Where would you put it to work?

Apparently, we’re not ready to say goodbye to summer. ☀️

Last week, the SDA team took a little break from drawings, deadlines, and design decisions for a team-building afternoon of tie dye.

And, in true SDA fashion, we were so busy having fun that we completely forgot to take pictures while it was actually happening. There is one small piece of evidence, though: the finished shirts.

We also made sure no one was left out. Deb joined us from afar via FaceTime, tie dyeing her shirt right alongside us from her home office. Technology may not be able to transport you to the backyard, but it can at least make sure you don't miss the good stuff.

So here’s the photographic evidence we managed to collect. A little color, a little creativity, and a good reminder that sometimes the best team-building activities are the ones where you forget to document. 🌈

What Is Old Is New Again.

It’s not a new idea. We see it over and over again in cars, fashion, music, history, and design. Styles come back around, but they rarely return exactly as they were. Instead, designers reinterpret familiar ideas for the way we live today.

The checkerboard or harlequin pattern is a perfect example. Geometric floor patterns have been used for thousands of years, appearing throughout historic architecture and interiors. Their staying power says something about good design: some patterns simply refuse to go out of style.

Today, we’re seeing these classic patterns reimagined in fresh materials, unexpected colors, and contemporary spaces.

Old idea. New interpretation. Still works.

Up next: the hearth.

The original tile in front of Ed's fireplace was too badly damaged to be salvaged, so this small section will be replaced with a carefully selected new tile. It's another example of the balance we're finding throughout Mix Place: preserve what can be saved, thoughtfully replace what can't, and make sure the finished result still feels like it belongs.

A little more progress, a lot more character.

The upstairs bath at Mix Place is taking shape with the installation of the new mosaic floor and the horizontal tile and accent details on the wet wall.

The restored original green tile remains the star of the space, while the new finishes complement it rather than compete with it. A careful balance of pattern, texture, color, and history is beginning to bring the design to life.
