For years I worked in the library and bookselling world.

Often, patrons or customers asked me for help -- help finding THE book, the one whose title they couldn't recall.

"But, I remember the book is blue..." they'd add.

Sometimes they new the author's name, details about the cover art, the genre, or even the premise.

But sometimes all I got was "It's blue."

Last weekend I did this, or a version of this, at my local yarn shop.

"I am looking for yarn. Blue yarn," I explained. "Blue, for my daughter, who is very particular."

I pulled a small ball of ancient baby blue acrylic from my pocket.

The clerk was so kind and helpful, guiding me around the shop. We held my little ball of blue yarn up to dozens of other blues, gently judging their undertones, holding them in different lights.

She took the simple request for blue yarn "like this one" and pried more information from me - this thickness, that material, not that light, not that bright - and I walked away with THE yarn!

On the way home I laughed, remembering all of the Blue Book requests I had received, many of which I successfully helped the eager readers to locate. The joy we all felt when we landed on the right book never got old.

Thank you, Sara(h?) at Woven Art Yarn Shop, for finding my blue yarn, which was indeed exactly the right choice.

Weird and wiggly worm hats are at the top of the 2026 trend lists!

Over the weekend I finished a fourth red hat, made for a friend in Florida.

I thought I was finished, and then my daughter requested one! And then a neighbor, and then a friend of a friend... ðŸĪŠ

The viral internet response to this hat pattern inspired much discussion, arguing, gatekeeping and virtue signaling about whether knitting these hats was "worth it" as a form of protest.

For me, and in my community the answer is a resounding YES. Knitting a simple red hat is a valuable, meaningful action undertaken independently, often alone. It's a visual reminder that all is not well. Sharing these hats with passionate, kindhearted people is a step towards what is right. The trick is to take many actions, in many ways... and not just share about it on social media.

And also, it's just a hat. I'm appalled by how much energy folks have put into arguing about the pros and cons of knitting a red hat. We have far more important things to do, Friends.

Every now and again the knitters take up needles in defense of freedom.

Over the past 10 years I have seen countless politically-motivated makes - special hats with a message, deliberatelt designed sweaters, amigurumi meant to speak volumes, lace collars reminiscent of a great thinker, expressive mitts and more.

This week, in response to recent events, a historically inspired hat pattern went viral.

Some friends politely requested that I make a few, and I am happy to oblige.

When there is unrest or injustice in a society, it is guaranteed that the crafters are working on solutions.

Meet Bernie the Beardie

He is the hottest model on the couture cold-blooded fashion scene.

Dreaming up this special holiday outfit for my friend's bearded dragon was very silly. and satisfying.
