the last of the tomatoes...

There's a particular evening in late August when you can feel the season start to turn. The daylight lingers just a little less than it did in July.

Stephen and I have been sitting with our stewardship of this building you all know as Lumberman's Mercantile, a bank that's stood in Bay City since the 1880s, and thinking about how they lived back then has started to change the way we think about a table.

The people who built this place knew how to entertain. Lumber money built grand rooms in this town for exactly that reason, to gather people in them.

So this week we set a table outside, in that same spirit.
Tomatoes pulled from the garden, a bottle of Lucesca poured generously over everything because that's the only way we know how to do it. Bread torn instead of sliced. Nothing plated, everything passed. The kind of hosting that doesn't need much beyond good ingredients and people you want at your table, which is probably exactly how they did it 145 years ago too.

There's something about eating outside as summer starts to close that feels almost ceremonial. Not a party. Just people, food grown nearby, and the last of the long light.
We're not ready to let go of it yet. So we didn't.

But we can feel what's coming, and being caretakers of an old building means the next season always shows itself first. The candles will move from citronella to something warmer soon. The linens will get heavier. The garden will turn. That's the chapter we're walking into next, in a building that's seen a hundred and forty five of them.

Late August has a particular feel. The daylight lasts a little less than it did in July, and you can sense the season starting to turn.
