Okay purple lovers, and lovers of weird cuts this one’s for you. 😍💜

This week we’re spotlighting the absolutely gorgeous Sugilite!

Sugilite is a relatively rare mineral first identified in Japan in the 1944 and later named after Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, but the intensely purple gem material collectors and jewelers go crazy for is most famously associated with the Wessels and N'Chwaning Mine area in South Africa’s Kalahari manganese fields.

Its color can range from soft lilac and lavender all the way to rich grape, violet, and deep reddish-purple, often mixed with dramatic black matrix. 💜🖤
That bold contrast is a BIG part of what makes Sugilite such an eye-catcher in finished jewelry. Because high-quality material with strong purple color can be difficult to come by, good Sugilite has become increasingly sought after by collectors, lapidaries, and jewelry makers. Every cab has its own personality depending on the color, pattern, and matrix.
A few quick facts:

Mineral class: Silicate → cyclosilicate
Chemical formula: roughly KNa₂(Fe,Mn,Al)₂Li₃Si₁₂O₃₀
Hardness: about 5.5–6.5 Mohs
Color: lilac and lavender through rich purple/magenta; sometimes nearly black
Crystal system: Hexagonal

That gorgeous purple color is primarily associated with manganese in its structure.

We’re heading Down Under for this week’s Wildcard Wednesday 🇦🇺🪨

Andamooka Opal comes from the Andamooka opal fields of South Australia, where opal was discovered in the 1930s. The area went on to become one of Australia’s famous opal-producing regions—and the material coming out of there can be seriously wild.

One of the coolest things about Andamooka is how much variety it can have. You’ll find everything from lighter matrix material to darker host rock, with flashes of blue, green, purple, orange, red and everything in between. 🌈🔥

Andamooka is also especially well known for its matrix opal. Because some of the natural material can be pale or porous, a traditional darkening treatment has often been used to deepen the surrounding matrix and make that colorful opal play absolutely POP. 👀✨

Every piece has its own personality—which is exactly the kind of weird, beautiful material us Rock Goblins live for. 😂🖤
