Belfast Bay Shade Company: handcrafted lampshades & fine art for the home

Our durable handcrafted shades are printed and constructed in our Belfast studio. We make all our own printing plates and our botanical designs are made with plants from our vegetable, herb and ornamental gardens. We print on etching presses and ink each plate individually to produce one-of-a-kind fine art prints in a wid

e variety of colorful motifs. All our shades are treated with UVLS polymer varnish to prevent fading from UV light with a finish that discourages dust build-up and can be easily cleaned. Euro or Nord fitters work with commercially available swag cord sets as well as pendant fixtures for track, hardwire ceiling canopies or wall socket. Our shades can also be used with table and floor lamps and can be adapted for use with traditional harps. Shades on any kind of lamp fitter rings can also be ordered for specific designs. Fixture adapters for uno, candelabra, and washer tops are available. Early season greens- we love to see them! Plants from the garden provide endless inspiration for our designs. Perhaps these are future prints in the making?

Pictured are:
- We’re up close and personal with a blooming chickweed (Stellaria media). Harvest and put in salads, with its mild, “grassy” flavor.
- Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) leaves. A bitter plant that calms the heart. A non-smelly member of the mint family, indicated by its super square stems.
- Lastly, an abundant crop of garlic (Allium sativum) emerging from the ground. They first appeared at the start of the month.

Which plants are you seeing?

Before our shades ever hang off of light fixtures, they first spend time on coat hangers. This is an intermediary step in the production process. What does that look like?

🖌️ All of our designs are our own! We start off making collagraph plates with plants & found materials. After printing with an etching press, the designs are photographed and uploaded to a US-based fabric print shop.

📦 Once printed, the fabrics ship to us here in Maine.

✂️ We iron, measure, and cut the fabric to size and lay them onto their backing material.

🧥 They might hang tight on a coat hanger, until we decide to roll them. Rolling is the step where they get wrapped and adhered to rings.

💡Showtime! Constructed shades first illuminate our showroom and when discovered by you - make their way into your home, workspace, or garden.

Whew. That’s a lot of steps for one shade, but we think it’s worth it!

What do you think when you see a sunflower? Beauty? Amazement at the strength of the stalk to hold the heavy head high? How they nourish the birds and bees with their pollen and seeds? How they support runner beans as they climb up them? Something else?

We have a line of shades that celebrate these qualities of the sunflower. We donate a portion of the proceeds from these shades to Waldo County Bounty, to relief efforts in Ukraine, and to projects aiding refugees in Gaza.

Tomorrow, Bagaduce Music is putting on a benefit concert for music-related relief efforts in Asheville, North Carolina. They want to support musicians and artists affected by Hurricane Helene. A silent auction will be held, with auction items such as a sunflower lampshade from us, WERU gear, a Peter Baldwin apple ladder, and more!

Many people in the region carry on cultural traditions and make a living through their music. Hurricanes not only destroy roads and buildings, but personal effects as well. Many musicians lost their instruments during the storm. We think the ability to create art and having sources of beauty (like sunflowers) are crucial for resiliency and strength during difficult times.

If you would like to support people in North Carolina but are unable to attend the event, check out these two organizations that they're raising funds for:

ReString Appalachia - a project to get instruments back into the hands of musicians https://americansongcatcher.com/restringappalachia/

LEAF Global Arts - raising funds to distribute to artists https://theleaf.org/
