This project was wrapped up in Dec of 2024. I’m way behind in updating this page, but wanted to make this post because this en-suite sure turned out nice!
This was a cramped and dated bathroom with a fiberglass shower stall. We tore all that out and pushed the wall back so we could move the toilet back a foot and expand the shower a bit. It is amazing how even a little more space can make a bathroom feel that much bigger. We moved all the plumbing and most of the electrical, added some radiant floor heat, and a strip of led lights, on a dimmer, behind the log.
The real challenge here was the fact that this is a log home. Logs move, tile installations don’t. I didn’t realize until we dug into it, that the ceiling of the bathroom had been connected to the 1 1/2” thick tongue and groove that makes up the bottom of the roof, thus subject to the movement of the logs it rests on. We did some fancy framing to separate the ceiling in the shower from the roof. There are some hidden movement joints. The ceiling is level now, but had been brought down on one side by the settling logs on the exterior wall in the course of the thirty or so years since it was built.
The client did a great job selecting the blue marble to complement the somewhat orange logs and wood found throughout the house. I especially like the niche we created next to the vanity to provide some shelf space. It is still a small bathroom, but it feels big, looks great, and functions well.
