I hear that all of the time. Folks saying that you have to use a cross cut sled to make accurate cross cuts.

But here’s the deal….

If you take time to dial in your miter saw it will be accurate enough to do whatever you need to do. Will a sled be more accurate? Maybe. But so often woodworkers too focused absolute precision that they forget wood moves. We aren’t machinist. 😂

Be as accurate as you can be, but don’t forget to have fun!

It’s tempting to just cut it flush and fill it in.

But if you grab a set of side cutters and pry up on your square you can remove the nail entirely and not mar the face of your work piece!

Here’s how I do it.

Cut a quick jig out of scrap plywood that is half the diameter of the circle you want. Run the router jig around the work piece a few times.

Then take a jig saw and cut off the majority of the waste. Follow up with a flush trim bit from the topside and you’re good to go! 🤘🏼

Woodworking doesn’t have to be as complicated as we make it.

You don’t always need a fancy rail system, or expensive tools, or adjustable stop blocks. Sometimes a scrap piece nailed to the bench works just as good!
