We have received so, so nice comments on this Anza project currently on domino. It’s the cherry on top as this is a full circle moment for this project. The homeowner discovered our work in 2015 in a Domino issue, founding principal Lynn Kloythanomsup’s first published project - her San Francisco apartment - and was one of our first calls. Now 11 years later, the project appears on Domino. One of the best surprises was hearing from the family of the previous Chinese homeowners, with memories of hosting mah jong games in the dining room. It is so sweet to hear they are pleased with the upkeep of the home, as many of the updates in the renovation (with architect Susie Douglas and contractor Ben Hardy & Company) were quieter repairs to make the home more sound. The neighborhood this home is in, the Richmond district in SF, has historically been a Chinese and Russian immigrant community, forged through overcoming historical housing restrictions, and is still today a cultural community center with an awesome commercial area (go there for great food!). It’s nice to picture all the family dinners that were served here. Here’s the homeowner’s current office, off the kitchen, and the aforementioned dining room.

Tucked at the end of the hallway is an office and guest spillover space. Custom mattresses stack to create a daybed; when unstacked, they are twin beds for nieces and nephews. The stool is a Ben & Aja Blanc piece, purchased almost 10 years ago, still looking fresh. See more from the domino story on this project at the link in profile!

For our Anza project up on domino this week, we introduced little pattern, some of which is this patchwork fireplace tile composed from salvaged, antique Delft tile from Regts - Delft Tiles in the Netherlands. The sepia Delft was individually selected by our client, speaking to her love of animals - her family shows Corgis - with a carefully “randomized” layout by us with Regt’s. Our Anza project is up now on domino! Many years in the making, this was one of our very first furnishing projects when Lynn Kloythanomsup started the company 11 years ago. We were later called back for a restoration with architect Susanna Douglas and Ben Hardy & Company for clients who really took the care and stewardship to refresh the older bones with interventions that made the background more solid - plus a bath renovation. For us, it’s not a lot of pattern. Just some good paint, textures, and a focus on contemporary heirloom-quality furniture and artwork.

We are wintering from our room for the Holiday House in Roslyn, Long Island 🎄

Our goal was to do something a little different and darker for the coastal catalog brand while still feeling settled in place in this historic town.

Inspired by the holiday abundance of Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, our team crafted handmade decorations for our tree with popcorn garland, shellacked orange slices, and Finnish cutout star ornaments. We had help from our partners who fabricated our cafe curtains, made from the tops of Serena & Lily’s embroidered eyelet bedsheets, helped us make the frilly gingham seat cushions, and contributed the plaster mouldings that give our room more historic weight, all washed in Preference Red paint by .

A couple months ago, we promoted from Berkeley Studio Director to Principal Designer! Here’s the press clip from . In our end of year flurry, this post has been delayed, but I hope it doesn’t downplay that this promotion is quite meaningful for our team. Everyone around me knows, and now the rest of you can share in the knowledge too, that Heather is the vertebrae of our team and without her, we wouldn’t have our very important systems, our structure for designer growth and development, and the equally important internal discussions that get us there. To boot, she is the most thoughtful interior designer and has been leading projects with us (without my butting in, or an attempted restrained version of it) for years, some of which you see her share progress on on Instagram, some of which we are finally getting around to adding to our portfolio or lining up for publication. I am so fortunate to have found a thought partner and leader in Heather. We bicker and stretch each other but in that it’s evident how much she cares about me and everyone, and together we get to work toward our little company’s big dreams. Thank you Heather, and congrats! -

A special thank you to artist for gracing our projects with his beautiful paintings that capture the feeling and light of our nostalgic places. ⁠

We also recently visited Drew's home studio, set in Bay Area modernist architect Beverley Thorne's personal residence, where we were lucky to experience the ambition and also the idiosyncrasies of an architect's personal project and home addition, a reflection that we feel all too true for both our own homes and the homes of our clients, very real people. ⁠
⁠
We visited with Drew to pick up a few pieces for a project (we can't wait to show you) and get a guided tour through the evolution of his recent works along with the hillside house. It's hard to split the two apart, now that we've seen how he lives and works. The house is filled with work by close friends and collaborators-at-some-point. There's a conversation pit where life drawing workshops happen, sitting cross legged happens, and picture kids with long hair scampering about too. Like Drew's work, these moments of relaxation, closeness, and friendship merge on to a backdrop of the outdoors and natural landscape. While previewing the works, we proudly called out scenes in the East Bay, Tahoe, Yuba, Hawaii - all familiar and sentimental to those that have a connection to those places and are drawn to the work.⁠ We all nodded and came to the conclusion that this kind of work and living this intimately and slowly with others is a form of resistance. Thank you for the reset, !⁠

It’s Heather, back with an appreciation post for !

Rayburn House’s petite size is lessened by its high ceilings, allowing for tall windows. Thanks to a southern exposure, the living and dining rooms receive spectacular light - the kind that enters in warm, embracing, room-soaking rays (when the sun is not ensconced in fog).

The original dining room wore a tall, paneled wainscot topped with a coffered ceiling, whose stout Craftsmen detailing felt overpowering. A pivot seemed necessary to rebalance the rooms, particularly on this floor where the plan is quite open.

We re-thought the space, designing paneling with profiles that were visually lightweight and extending it to meet a coved crown that would echo the graceful curves in the adjacent living room. With its new interior architecture, the room was beginning to feel like a Victorian conservatory, so we floated the idea of introducing decorative plasterwork.

We had visions of vines that would wind around the astragals, abundant with blossoms, more wild than cultivated. A new ceiling medallion in the living room would share this new language. We gathered imagery (see slide no. 5) that communicated the delicate detailing we were imagining, and took it to Emily at Foster Reeve for discussion.

Amongst other flowers, Emily suggested clematis - a fragrant climbing vine, some varietals of which are native to Northern California. That got us all humming - sketching began and we were off to the races! See the video on slide no. 6, showing the progression of design leading to the final site installation. We’re thrilled with how it’s all coming together, with enthusiastic credit to the *many* talented folks at Foster Reeve.
