On this day, June 16, we remember Gunnery Sergeant Robert H. McCard , who made the ultimate sacrifice during the battle for Saipan in 1944. 🇺🇸
A 25-year-old Marine from Syracuse, New York, McCard manned his tank under heavy enemy fire, refusing to surrender even after his vehicle was disabled. His courageous actions throwing grenades to cover his crew’s escape and returning fire with the tank’s machine gun allowed his men to survive while he gave his life in the fight.
For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His legacy lives on through the USS Robert H. McCard, commissioned in 1945, and the enduring memory of his heroism.
💬 How do stories like McCard’s inspire us to reflect on courage, leadership, and selflessness today?
