Ruby the elephant was not just one of the most beloved animals at the Phoenix Zoo — she became one of its most unexpected artists. After her keepers noticed her scratching lines in the dirt with sticks, they gave her paint, brushes, and a canvas, and Ruby began creating colorful abstract paintings with her trunk. What started as a simple enrichment activity quickly turned into something much bigger, as visitors became fascinated by the sight of an elephant making art, collectors lined up for her work, and her paintings helped raise money for the zoo’s endangered animal fund. Ruby’s story became famous because it showed a different side of animal intelligence, curiosity, and personality — not just strength and size, but creativity, expression, and connection. Her artwork did more than hang on walls; it helped support conservation and reminded people that animals are far more complex, emotional, and remarkable than we often realize.

It was created by blowing pigment over a hand pressed against the rock — like a prehistoric finger painting.

‘Almond Blossom’ 🌸 isn’t just a beautiful spring scene, it’s one of Van Gogh’s most personal works. Vincent painted it in 1890 to celebrate the birth of his nephew, Theo and Jo’s baby, who was named Vincent after him. Almond trees bloom early in spring, so for Vincent the blossoms stood for new life and hope.
The work was cherished by the family from the start, kept by Jo van Gogh-Bonger and later her son Vincent Willem, which is why it ended up in our collection.

Can beauty be found everywhere? If we took more time to notice the ordinary, could it transform into something extraordinary? What do you think?
