Make sure to swing by Chirp Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am-6pm to pick up your bird-watching essentials!! Meet at Chirp between 7:30 and 8 a.m. on the day of the walk, and we will carpool to the walk location. The walk is free, but we ask that you sign up online on the Chirp website; space is limited.

Spring in Big Bear Lake is a particularly beautiful time. After the snow melts, it seems like almost overnight, the birds appear. Looking for a family-friendly bird watching trail? Hidden near the Boulevard lies an inconspicuous trail that leads to a top birding hotspot in Big Bear Lake: Sandalwood Marsh. Also known as Von’s Marsh, the trailhead is located 3 miles from Chirp Nature Center with parking along Sandalwood Drive. While walking the dirt trail, birders can watch sparrows flutter above open meadows, listen for blackbirds in the willows along Rathbun Creek, and spot ducks wading along the Lake’s edge.

This short, out-and-back trail is perfect for peaceful birdwatching at the marsh and for admiring beautiful lakefront views. With easy accessibility, a flat trail, and multiple water sources, Sandalwood Marsh can be enjoyed by young birders, experienced birders, and everyone in between.

Join Chirp Nature Center for a free guided bird walk on May 9, 2026, led by birding expert Matthew Schreiner. Birders of all levels are welcome to take part in this fun morning outing and explore some of Big Bear Lake’s favorite birding areas.
