October 10 1978 in Public Law 95-447, authorizes the production of a dollar showing Susan B. Anthony, the first non-mythical woman to appear on a circulating coin.

Under the leadership of U.S. Mint Director Stella B. Hackel, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin was first issued by the United States Mint in July 1979, replacing the Eisenhower Dollar. The coin was legislated on October 10, 1978, under President Jimmy Carter. Of the coin, Carter said it would, “be a constant reminder of the continuing struggle for the equality of all Americans." Designed by Frank Gasparro, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, it was the first U.S. circulating coin to feature the likeness of a real woman. https://bit.ly/2qvp1ui
