No, that’s not a basketball that landed in someone’s hydrangea. It’s the pendant in the entry of my little Victorian grandmother house. My grandson has given me the name “Bobbie”, which is very sweet but kind of weird because that was my mother’s name. He looks at the pendant and wants it on. “Bobbie, light! Bobbie, light!!” I’m thinking one day the spirit of my mother might actually turn it on for him. Hopefully he’ll soon start calling me Betsy - the name my other grandchildren use. (I obviously wasn’t prepared to be a grandmother when they were born and was terrified of being called something like…God forbid…granny.) With any luck, I’ll get to be Betsy for the rest of my life. Or else I’ll become Bobbie, my mother, which is actually not that far from the truth. The obsession with furniture…clippers in the back seat in case she screeched past the perfect branches - that was the real Bobbie. But Bobbie, please don’t turn on the light.

Btw, isn’t hydrangea season amazing?

Just made my crack-of-dawn flight to Charleston after somehow un-setting my alarm. Not sure how that happened! I haven’t raced to the airport with heart pounding in at least twenty years. Never again! Was my bedroom left looking like this beauty in soothing green linen? I wish!

A rustic, draped terrace off the kitchen and family room of some delightful clients. Gardeners and grandparents, they make me feel tired because they never sit down. We provided some seating just in case it ever happens. Not waiting around to find out…

Guess I should explain the arm that has sparked a thousand questions. It’s an old piece, an art student’s plaster rendering of the left arm of Michelangelo’s David. On an LA shopping trip with an adventurous client, we spotted it through the window of a vintage furniture store and thought it would be a fun, dramatic sculptural piece on an entry table. This is the reason we travel - to shop the brick and mortar dealers. There are incredible finds out there that we wouldn’t begin to know how to search for online. Can’t tell you the number of times I’ve thought, “Whoa! Look at that! Can’t believe I’ve stumbled on this prize!” I’m allergic to things sold at market and work hard to find pieces of great character or scale for all my projects.
