This month I traveled to my home town, Guayaquil, in Ecuador. I had the opportunity to visit some of the original constructions from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Casa Julian Coronel, Banco Territorial and Casa Lavayen Paredes are a magnificent example of beauty, innovation and sustainability. These were built with very high ceilings, and air circulation design, perfect for a warm weather, allowing temperatures to drop inside and be comfortable while in the house. The windows allowed light to come in, air to circulate but also their small spaces did not allowed unwanted insects to come inside. Also they were made with local materials, and by wood crafters who carefully designed every piece of wood.

In spite of the wonderful modern innovations, nowadays, we, architects, still use the same principles for designing.
