The Italian inlaid marble floor is so beautiful with the plaster walls….The classic late 18th century Italian giltwood and marble console table with the gorgeous antique Venetian mirror are perfect for the space. The touch of modern lighting with a touch of “ gilt “ on the shades with a lovely Italian bust in the center is all that is needed for this table scape. Congratulations to Suzanne Tucker for this beautiful room. I’m always admiring her work.

THE EGG
The Tradition of the Paschal Egg

There is a beautiful tradition within the life of the Church for believers to have as their last meal before beginning the Great Lenten Fast, to eat a hard boiled egg, white in color. This egg represents our sinful nature, and we eat this egg with the hope that the Lenten journey will bring us to repentance, and make us worthy to receive the Risen Lord Jesus Christ.

The great and holy myrrh-bearer Mary Magdalene, equal of the apostles, during a dinner with the emperor Tiberius Caesar, was speaking about Christ's resurrection. Caesar scoffed at her, saying that a man could rise from the dead no more than the egg in her hand could turn red. Immediately, the egg turned red. This is believed to be an explanation for dyeing eggs red at Pascha.

At the end of Matins, during the Paschal service, the priest hands out a red egg, symbolizing the blood of Christ, to each worshiper. At the beginning of the Paschal feast, following the Midnight Liturgy, believers break the Lenten Fast by again eating an egg.

As we hit our red eggs together, while saying, "Christ is Risen", we are symbolically proclaiming the truth that Christ, by his death and holy resurrection, broke the bonds and power of death. The breaking of the eggs represents the opening of the tomb, and the crashing of the doors of hell, with Christ destroying the power of darkness and death, forever.

With love in Christ,
Abbot Tryphon

Throw back Thursday…..It’s been awhile since I’ve posted on my professional page so a big hello to all….hope your fall 2024 is going well.
Here are two photos taken by yours truly in the dining room of my former Memphis home where we lived and worked with our inventory and where I had my design studio. Featured on the early 18th century carved walnut console attributed to Pierre Hache of Grenoble, FR ( sold ) are important examples of 17th and 18th century French faience from Nevers and Rouen. A pair of 17th century Italian majolica chargers ( sold ) in the photo with the “ real lemon Christmas tree “ arranged in an important 17th century Nevers jardiniere seen in the previous photo with an arrangement of live orchids.
The bay window dressed in Fortuny fabric which admittedly I removed and have stored since we sold the house. The jardiniere is one of the few pieces left of the blue and white collection which I’ve decided not to part with.
For those who do not know, we are back in my hometown of Birmingham, AL and very happy to be near family and friends. My hubby and I have been very busy since we moved “ home “ over a year ago working on a large project with a client of many years …..As a “ boutique designer “ I do everything from soup to nuts myself and do not rely on a staff except for my husband who handles the business details for my jobs.
As for the antiques and decorative arts business, I am still involved in the trade but with little inventory. I continue to provide broker services to those designers, architects and individuals who seek special items which I source through my many contacts I’ve developed since 1987. This experience is very valuable and I’ve been so fortunate through the years to have met and worked with the most talented and knowledgeable people in my field.

I Hope you all are doing well and I’ll be more present on this page in the future.

Thank you for following,

Mary Helen

Sharing this beautiful bedroom designed by the talented Michael Simon who I met in NY many years ago when he designed his first room for the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse in NYC. Michael has an amazing eye for details which draws me to his meticulous style. Hope you enjoy this post and remember it’s all in good taste…it’s all about the details.
