A detail that makes a huge difference in a kitchen: wall sconces above the kitchen sink.

They add unexpected charm to an otherwise overlooked spot for lighting—bringing warmth, personality, and practical task lighting all in one.

We spend so much time at the sink, whether we’re doing dishes, meal prepping, or cleaning up after the day. It’s a hardworking area of the kitchen that deserves just as much attention to detail as the rest of the space!

And we love how a beautiful sconce can make that everyday spot feel a little more inviting and uniquely yours.

As lighting specialists, these are our non-negotiables for lighting a kitchen:

Toe-kick lighting — One of those subtle details that completely elevates a kitchen. It creates a soft glow at floor level, adds another layer of light, and makes cabinetry feel almost like it’s floating.

Oversized island pendants — A must. And when in doubt, go bigger! Your island is often the focal point of the kitchen, and undersized fixtures can easily get lost in the scale of the space.

LED tape lighting under cabinets + shelving — Perfect for adding warmth and ambience when you’re entertaining, winding down at night, or simply want a soft nightlight without turning on your overhead lighting.

Recessed puck lighting inside glass cabinetry — Don’t skip this detail! Illuminating pottery, glassware, or fine china turns your cabinetry into a feature in itself. It may seem like a small addition, but it makes a huge difference in the finished space.

The best kitchen lighting isn’t one fixture—it’s layers of light working together.

Exterior lighting is just as important as your interior lighting—and the secret is in the layers.

A beautifully lit exterior needs a mix of direct and indirect lighting to create both function and atmosphere.

Goosenecks provide focused downlighting, perfect for highlighting specific areas and architectural details.

Recessed lighting adds another layer of direct light while staying discreet and letting the architecture take center stage.

How large should your kitchen island pendants be?

If you’ve ever wondered about the correct scale and proportions for your kitchen lighting, we have you covered.

In this kitchen, we were working with 10-foot ceilings, an 8-foot island, and a beautiful view of Lake Martin—all important factors when selecting the right fixtures.

Our advice? Go bigger than you might think.

Here, we chose 17-inch-diameter pendants that give the island the scale it needs while their translucent design keeps the sightlines open and allows that lake view to remain the star.

When in doubt, go big. And when you’re really in doubt, come see us at the Mayer Lighting showroom—we’ll do the hard work for you.
