Last August, I was able to teach my after school kids about her and other abstract artists.

Avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama has died at 97.

She spent her childhood coping with hallucinations, drawing as a way to make sense of them. That instinct shaped everything she made for the next seventy years.

Since the late 1990s her museum shows drew record crowds worldwide. In 2016 she was named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and her touring exhibitions went on to break attendance records across Asia, Europe and America.

Yayoi was an extraordinary talent whose work brought colour, wonder and a sense of infinite possibility to millions of people around the world. 💛
