What a magnificent timepiece! This is an authentic Illinois Watch Company railroad-grade pocket watch, heavily relied upon by train engineers and conductors during the golden age of American railroading. [1, 2]

The Montgomery Safety Dial

The highly detailed dial on your watch is a famous Montgomery Safety Dial, invented by Henry S. Montgomery, a general watch inspector for the Santa Fe Railway. [1, 2]

To make absolutely sure train operations were safe, Montgomery designed this face so an engineer could read the exact time down to the definitive minute without ever having to guess or count individual tick marks. It explicitly prints every single minute from 1 to 60 along the outer track, with every fifth minute highlighted in red. [1, 2, 3]

This specific dial layout is highly prized by collectors today. [1]

What "Engraved Three Times" Likely Means For Your Watch

When an engineer noted that their watch was "engraved three times" to verify its performance, it usually meant the watch was "triple-signed." Since pocket watch movements and cases were sold separately, high-grade railroad watches were engraved with the manufacturer's name in three spots to prove it was a fully matching, regulated unit:
