As a little girl, I had the privilege of taking private art lessons in the basement of a lady named Mrs. Funk. Although those memories take me back 20+ years, I remember some of it so vividly.
Mrs. Funk taught me the importance of stepping back from my drawing throughout the process. To not get too wrapped up and hurry through but rather take my time and step back to gain another perspective every once in a while. I feel like this is a good life lesson as well.
She showed me the wonders of charcoal, pastels, oil paints, watercolor, colored pencils, etc. I loved creating masterpieces (ha! when you're 6, every piece is a "masterpiece") in her basement sometimes just the two of us and sometimes with other little children. We would listen to music and get lost in the canvas. I am so thankful to have known the talented Mrs. Funk and to have those memories to look back on.
One of the traditions Mrs. Funk taught me was the tradition of creating a Christmas card every year. Family and friends have collections of about 20 Christmas cards from me throughout the years. Although each year the card's theme and medium change, the tradition itself has hung on strong.
Some years I'm on top of it and I finish my cards well in advance, while other years I wait the last minute to finish my card. What keeps me going each year is knowing how much my family and friends look forward to the card to add to their collection. They're my accountability to stay in touch and take the time to reflect on our relationship and write them a brief note.
I'm running behind on this year's design, so my Christmas Card is turning into a "New Year" card. Although it's late, I am determined to create something and send it out nonetheless.
I thought it would be fun to look back on the cards I've made the last couple of years. Check them out!
(I guess you can tell I love painting trees. HA! Iโve been in a Tree mood for the past couple of years. ๐)
