I know you’re probably tired of hearing me complain about polishing silver, so today’s post is absolutely, positively NOT about polishing silver. We are not discussing it. We are not thinking about it. We are moving on. 😎

Instead, let’s talk about some gorgeous NEW pendants that just arrived at Herbal Roots & Antiques!

We have moss agate with druzy, magnetite, brecciated jasper, fossil coral, green tree agate, scolecite, and larimar!

And for my ladies who believe a pendant should be big enough to have its own zip code, I think you’re going to LOVE these! We’ve got some real statement pieces that deserve their own grand entrance.

Come see what’s new at the store! There’s a whole lot of pretty happening around here.

After talking with customers and watching this hurricane keep us guessing, we’ve decided it’s better to play it safe!

Herbal Roots & Antiques will be CLOSED Friday, October 9th. We’ll be taking the extra day to stay safe, stay dry, and let Mother Nature figure out what she’s going to do.

We’ll reopen Tuesday, October 13th, ready to get back to business!

Well folks… here we go again.

After living through Hurricane Michael, we all know better than to underestimate a storm. This one is already in the Gulf, and at this point, there’s just no telling what it’s going to do before it’s all said and done.

Please take this storm seriously and make sure you’re prepared. Have plenty of non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other necessities on hand. And please don’t forget about your pets! Make sure they have plenty of food and water and a safe place to ride out the storm.

I'm hoping everyone stays safe and dry and that this storm turns out to be nothing more than a good excuse to stay home and watch the weather. But after Michael, we know better than to take anything for granted.

As for Herbal Roots & Antiques, I plan to be OPEN Friday unless the weather takes a turn for the worse. If anything changes, I'll post an update here on Facebook.

I will also be CLOSED Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, also known as Columbus Day.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and keep an eye on the weather. It’s always better to have too much water and canned food than to be standing in the dark thinking, “Well… I probably should have bought that yesterday.”

Take a guess what I did last weekend…

If you guessed polish silver, you would be correct!

Because apparently I looked around the shop and thought, “You know what this place needs? A whole lot more silver that needs polishing.”

Well, the good news is that the polishing marathon is over(for now), and the results are now on the floor for sale!

We have some beautiful new pieces from makers including Leonard Silver, Rogers, Poole, and Victor Silver Company, with everything from ornate serving trays and pierced gallery pieces to some gorgeous decorative serving dishes. And honestly, just look at how beautifully these pieces can be staged. Put a few of them on your holiday table and suddenly you look like you have your life completely together.

And then there’s the star of the silver collection…

A 1955 Eden Roc Hotel Miami Beach silver-soldered coffee pot.

This is not your average little silver-plated coffee pot. It was made for commercial hotel use, so it has a heavier construction and thicker silver than ordinary household silverplate. And the fact that it came from the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach, dating to 1955, gives it a pretty fantastic piece of Miami history.

So yes, somebody had to polish all this silver.

No, I still wouldn’t say it was fun.

But now that it’s finished, I have to admit… it was worth the sore shoulders.

Nobody ever said polishing silver and brass was fun. But somebody had to do it, and apparently that somebody was me.

I’ve been busy making some serious shine happen at Herbal Roots and Antiques— silver-plated covered platters, a gorgeous platter with grape detailing, brass pieces, and those fabulous trumpet candlestick holders with their mixed-metal bases.

And then there’s the BIG Russian brass basin marked with the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle and Kolchugin markings. Because apparently I decided polishing one piece of history wasn’t enough.

Everything is cleaned, polished and ready for a new home.

What’s going on at Herbal Roots this week?

Apparently, we’ve decided to sell a little bit of everything!

We’ve got two vintage wooden bookshelves looking for new homes, along with a vintage game board/game piece that definitely has some stories to tell.

And if you’re fighting off that little bug going around, we’ve got GINGER! A whole new variety of ginger chews, ginger crystals, turmeric ginger, matcha ginger, mango, lychee, blood orange and more.

Then there’s the Manuka honey — three flavors of Manuka honey lozenges, MGO 550+ Manuka honey, MGO 200 honey blend, and pure honeycomb. Rich, flavorful and packed with that good old-fashioned honey goodness.

So whether you came in for herbs, honey, ginger… or somehow walked out with a vintage bookshelf, we’ve got you covered.

Mystery Piece — I Need Your Help!

Okay, y’all… I have officially met my match.

I have this WOOD THING in the shop, and after taking it apart in my mind about 47 different ways, measuring it, studying the construction, and searching every description I can think of…

I GOT NOTHING.

Right now, it has been officially promoted to “The Mystery Piece.”

It has two long compartments, a center divider, a sloped section, some very interesting woodworking, and a few holes that seem like they probably had a purpose at some point in its life. I know somebody out there is going to look at these pictures and say, “Oh, honey… I KNOW exactly what that is.”

And if that somebody is you — PLEASE tell me!

What was it used for? What is it called? What did it hold? Was it part of something else?

I am throwing this one out to my wonderful customers because somebody out there has the obscure piece of knowledge I’m missing.

Help a shopkeeper out! Drop your best guess in the comments. And if you know for certain what it is, I may have to crown you the official winner of the “What in the world is that wooden thing?” contest.

So, I went to the SOHO South Health Expo and, as usual, came across a few things that caught my attention.

One of the coolest discoveries was Palo Azul. The wood itself doesn’t react to UV light, but the tea made from the bark does — the beautiful blue tea actually GLOWS under a UV light. 💙 I’m thinking about brewing some of this with some dry ice and a UV light at Halloween…. Would look so cool!

Naturally, I had to order some. I’ll be trying it out and seeing what I think.

I also picked up some samples of H₂ molecular hydrogen tablets, which dissolve in water and are taken as a hydrogen-infused drink. The product pictured is not the one I ordered, but I have the ones I chose on the way, along with a few other things that caught my interest.

I also have a handful of miscellaneous samples that I don’t plan to carry, but I’m happy to share them with my customers while I have them.

There are still a few more products I’m researching, so this is definitely to be continued…
