Sweet-scented Joe pye w**d (Eutrochium purpureum) is generally a smaller species and most often found in north Georgia (but there are a few reports of it in the upper Coastal Plain). It tends to grow in more shade, is not as tall, and has paler flowers than the other two species we’ve mentioned. According to Linda Chafin’s book – Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Georgia – a distinguishing characteristic is that the stem is purple colored at the leaf nodes. No word on the common name (sweet-scented) being more true for this species compared to the others.

It was a great day out at Cate Farms for their Makers Market!! Was so busy the first three hours I didn’t get to post! Met some wonderful people and sold many plants and fresh milled flour baked goods!! If you see something you want let me know and we can set up a time to come to the nursery!
