Flexible spaces make the most of precious square footage in the city. The garden level of this six-story brownstone is the perfect hangout space for kids and adults alike. By day, the children play safely on the modular sofa and large ottomans. In the evening, the space transforms to a lounge with wet bar. The room glows like a lantern at night, spilling light out onto the adjoining private courtyard. In the end, the design places effortless gatherings of loved ones and friends at its center. Cheers.

AFTER/BEFORE
The real power of interior design is not about the furniture. It lies in the ability to create a distinct point of view, a source of daily inspiration, a haven of effortless ease. Translating the unique essence of each project’s architecture, sense of place, and the people who will spend their most human moments within always leads us to a very individualized creative vision.

Here, a young family was hesitant to purchase this important historic home for fear of living like they were in a museum. We convinced them that good bones are priceless and can still fit today’s modern lifestyle. They never looked back…

We envisioned a dining room meant for living. We restored the embrasured window shutters, preserved the original stone fireplace, and added an 18th century gilded chandelier from Italy. We found exquisite 1940s Jean-Michel Frank dining chairs with piano finish and designed the sleek marble and walnut table as a modernist counterpoint. No rug means the kids can roller skate laps after lunch.

Color is one of the most powerful ways to create feeling, to conjure an emotional experience in a room. Like a remembered melody or a favorite scent, color can recall memories long forgotten.

Hyde Park Grey evokes lush plantings set against foggy London skies. Named for the largest of four Royal Parks between Kensington and Buckingham Palaces, it can be enveloping on its own. Its complex pigments also lend rich harmony to neutrals as well as colors with green, violet or grey undertones. For a fresh modern punch, pair it with its opposites in the orange family.

LISA THARP X ECOS Paints

The proof is in the paint.
Organic: No added pesticides, herbicides, fungicides.
Non-Toxic: Conforms to ASTM-D4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation, and respiratory effects.

AFTER/BEFORE
Can you guess how we upgraded this brand new kitchen sustainably? Read on for the story PLUS a renovation resource everyone should know.

When our clients purchased a new pied-à-terre, an all-white kitchen was just being installed (swipe for Before). With client dreams of a supper club vibe, we renovated with the very lightest touch.

Rather than wasting materials, we simply replaced the central upper cabinets with a floating shelf, added handmade tiles from Italy, and finished cabinetry with our own Bronze Age color 1534 from our designer paint collection with organic ECOS Paints.
Cabinets were donated to Boston Building Resources , an incredible resource for anyone undertaking a renovation. As a non-profit reuse center, they resell used and surplus building materials at steeply discounted prices. They will even de-install and pick up for a tax-deductible fee. Please consider this sustainable approach to your own renovation.

We believe the most enduring spaces balance 3 key attributes: Tailored + Comfortable + Unexpected.

The formula appears again and again in our design work.

Here, it is realized in this pretty powder room. The classic stone vanity and wainscot walls lend crisp tailored polish.
Nature-inspired wallpaper evokes a sense of comfort, and signals the mind to relax. Finally, the mid-century mirror injects an unexpected twist.

We love helping people find the balance in their homes. How do you put this formula to work in yours?

We are deeply grateful to Boston Home, editor Jaci Conry Hogan and her team, and writer Kyle Hoepner for the beautiful article in the magazine’s current Fall Issue.

We took inspiration from the modernist architecture of The Getty Center museum in LA… with its crisp white form and connection to expansive views. We added thick walnut “portals” throughout. They line doorways, windows, skylights, interior sight lines, and views with deep, rich frames.

This project is the result of close collaboration between our team and our dedicated partners, Charles R. Myer & Partners
ColumbiaContracting and Kochman Reidt + Haigh, without whom the vision would not be realized.

Fittingly, the stunning photography is by talented LA-based duo ARTURO+LAUREN.

Above all, we send special thanks to our clients for their trust and inspiration. It has been a privilege.
