Nestled within 147 acres of rolling hills in Western Massachusetts, this private family estate is a celebration of the region’s rich artistic and musical heritage. Conceived as a retreat with sanctuaries for creative expression, the property reflects a deep appreciation for the handmade and the enduring beauty of thoughtful design.

At its heart stands a two-story art and pottery studio, complete with a professional-grade kiln and pottery wheel – a dedicated destination for making and inspiration. Every detail was considered to support the owner’s creative process, with generous work surfaces, specialized storage, and flexible spaces for painting, pottery, and exploration.

Expansive windows flood the interiors with natural light while framing sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, creating an ever-changing backdrop for artistic work. The result is an intimate yet refined atelier where art, nature, and craftsmanship exist in perfect harmony alongside technical expertise.

Come inside this property in Boston’s Beacon Hill, a project that is just kicking off. It focuses on preserving and honoring the existing structure and integrity of this neighborhood of row houses, while making it livable for a young family.

Located in an historic section seeped in history, this dictates how updates can be made coupled with a desire to preserve handcrafted details. When brought into projects such as these, we feel pride and inspiration, rather than limitation, in what we recommend as a renovation path.

This project will balance family needs, tight city confines, and respect for the neighbors. The trust that these groups give to us in historic renovations is a treasure. Stay tuned as we progress on this build.

When concepting spaces, we often start by sketching ideas. Sometimes they make it into a final space, sometimes the idea is set aside for the time. In this hand sketch, incorporating mirrors into a space can change a perspective, offer sightlines, or even guide in wayfinding. They offer a layer to a space that creates interest, depth or dimension.

At the Bower Boston, a round mirror hung high highlights seating and creates an intimacy in a room with large windows and high ceilings.

“Everything that leaves this office is thoughtful and designed.” Our Cory Gans tells of the Planeta Design Group process when speaking with Kevin and Corey on the KCB Boiler Room Podcast by Kevin Cradock Builders.

For us, that looks like our entire team contributing to a project, so we are compounding our strengths and offerings. We are actively listening to our clients to ensure you are completely taken care of and satisfied with your new space.

“None but ourselves can free our minds.” The lyrics made famous by Bob Marley are inlaid into the floor at the threshold of a client’s home, greeting them as a gentle reminder as they enter.

While the message will endure as words of wisdom, the bronze metal that the inscription is etched into will age over time, becoming more personal and meaningful.

Thoughtfulness at each step of the design process. Incorporating special features that develop over time is a highlight of any project.

When interior design adds ceilings to the mix, it hits differently. These are the unexpected spaces that bring joy and whimsy. Often overlooked, ceilings are an area that can make an impact in design, raising the roof on what is possible for a space. We seek the challenge of bringing delight and meaning into this space, and are thrilled when clients bring it into the conversation.

Here are a few spots that have special meaning:

- Branding adorned on acoustical panels in a conference room
- Architectural reuse of the building’s letters, bridging its history to present day
- Backlighting via a perforated design, offering subtle light
- Storytelling of the building’s past via screen-printed banners showcasing previous manufacturing uses of cars, ships and tanks

What do you want for your ceilings? Let’s work together to make it a reality.

When concepting a Boston seaport penthouse with floor-to-ceiling windows, we kept the focus on the water. The interior common spaces stay neutral, allowing the beautiful views outside to fill the space. Depth was created through the use of materials – smooth stone, shiny metallic, rich fabrics – while accent lighting brings focus inward.

Creating a family space that is “effortless to live in,” the homeowners noted that “it was a pleasure to work with PDG because they took the time to really understand our goals before they began their work. They were very thorough from the beginning to the end.”

Security is often discussed in terms of technology, access control, or physical protection. Equally important forms of risk management include reputation, relationships, and trust.

Large residential projects exist within communities. How a project is managed, teams communicate, and construction impacts neighbors; all contribute to a client's long-term experience.

At Planeta Design Group, thoughtful project leadership extends beyond the property line. Protecting a client's interests means considering not only the home itself, but also the relationships and reputation that surround it, explains John Rusk of Rusk Renovations, Inc.

That broader view of stewardship was a recurring theme on ultra-high-net-worth security that we explore in our white paper: https://www.planetadesigngroup.com/guardianship
