In the second clip from a special interview with Studio Luz intern Jaliyah, she shares about her educational journey, career aspirations, and the kind of designer she hopes to become. Special thanks to her mentor and Studio Luz Designer Joshua Ssebuwufu, who conducted this interview.

Mentorship is about more than sharing what we know — it’s about helping emerging designers discover what they want to contribute to the profession and how they can do so. We’re excited to see where Jaliyah's ambition takes her.

From a one-day shadow to a week-long internship! We loved welcoming architecture student Lilly back to Studio Luz this summer for a week in our studio, and we celebrating her time with us with a team outing to Sweetie’s Ice Cream in Roslindale. Lilly first joined Studio Luz in 2023 as a high school student curious to learn more about the field, and now, as a rising sophomore at UVA’s School of Architecture, she’s continuing to explore that interest and build her skill set. We’re so happy to have had Lilly back this summer and even happier to know that she chose to pursue architecture — we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next!

From the grand opening of 75 Dudley Street in Nubian Square to projects taking shape across Dorchester and Mattapan, Studio Luz is advancing affordable housing through thoughtful design, sustainable building practices, and meaningful partnerships. We want to take a moment to spotlight our intern Jaliyah, who joined us earlier this year to hone her skills, gain hands-on experience, and explore what it means to build a career in architecture.

As part of her time with Studio Luz, Jaliyah connected with Designer Joshua Ssebuwufu, who has continued to mentor her and support her growth as an emerging designer. In a special interview, Joshua sits down with Jaliyah to reflect on her experience at Studio Luz and what she’s learned along the way.

Studio Luz had a wonderful visit with 7 students from the Universidad del Istmo in Guatemala, and Architect Roberto Viola Ochoa, a faculty member at the Universidad del Istmo and Roger Williams University. Principal Anthony Piermarini gave the architectural students a tour and shared a presentation with them describing what Studio Luz is all about. When Anthony is not teaching architecture at Wenthworth Institute of Technology, supporting students at every stage — in the classroom, as interns, or for a quick office visit — is one of his favorite things to do. A bittersweet day at Studio Luz as we say goodbye to Project Designer Kaitlin Pettenger! We’ve cherished Kaitlin’s contributions to Studio Luz over the years, from her start as a Student Co-op Intern in January 2022 to her time with us as a Project Designer. She has been a valued part of our team, and we’re grateful for all the ways she has helped shape our work and our studio.

As Kaitlin begins her next chapter and explores the world of construction management, we’re excited to see where her work takes her. Thank you Kaitlin, and we wish you all the best in your future ventures!

This past Saturday, Studio Luz Architects joined the Mattapan Unity 5K Fete with a community engagement booth for the Shaw-Taylor Facility Design Study, connecting with local residents and BPS families to hear their hopes and ideas for the new Shaw-Taylor Elementary School. Principal Hansy Better Barraza, Designers Leechen Zhu and Kaitlin Pettenger, Project Architect Andy Rodrigue from Arrowstreet, Senior Project Manager Cristina Clow from the City of Boston PFD, and BPS Shaw-Taylor Hub School Coordinator Judnise Guillet were all part of the day’s activities. To show even more support for the community, Hansy ran the 5K with her run club, LiveFitArmy, using the race as an opportunity to connect with fellow runners and celebrate the neighborhood.

The event was just one part of a larger community engagement process that will continue through the summer of 2027, giving students, families, staff, neighbors, and community partners multiple opportunities to help shape the future of Shaw-Taylor. Studio Luz Principal Anthony Piermarini and Senior Project Manager Ignacio Lopez joined Boston Communities and Norfolk Design + Construction for a walkthrough of the Harvard Street developments alongside Sheila Dillon, Chief of the Mayor's Office of Housing, and Daniel Lesser, Chief of Staff.

The tour included two properties currently under construction: 94 Harvard Street, a four-unit affordable condominium building, and 77 Harvard Street, a 13-unit Passive House-certifiable development. Both projects will expand affordable homeownership opportunities in Dorchester through the Welcome Home, Boston initiative.

The Shaw-Taylor Facility Design Study is officially underway! Over the next 14 months, students, families, staff, neighbors, and community partners will have multiple opportunities to help shape the vision, design, and future of the school. Our goal is to meet families and residents where they already gather and ensure community voices are included in planning the future Shaw-Taylor School building.
