McRae's architecturally pleasing forms appear potentially machine made, but are in fact all hand finished, with every detail impeccably hand crafted. Each lamp begins as a sculpted prototype, from which McRae makes a master mold, while all bowls and vases are hand thrown. The pieces are cast using low-fire earthenware. After curing for several days, each form is smoothed and prepped before he begi
ns his carving process. Each perforation is tooled, carved, and cleaned several times in order to create a finished surface. After a bisque firing, the pieces are glazed and fired one final time. Lawrence McRae studied landscape architecture at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. After moving to Boston, he studied sculpture at Radcliffe Pottery with artist Nancy Selvage. McRae's debut collection, DISH, was carried extensively throughout the country in museum shops and high-end retailers in the 1990's. McRae debuted his new eponymous collection in January 2009 and made an immediate splash in the market, most notably at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. Lawrence McRae shares his Boston studio with wife, and fellow ceramicist, Jill Rosenwald.
