Today, we’re taking a look inside the new Penner Field House at Brown University to celebrate the building’s dedication.

Sasaki architect Emily Parris walks us through the 76,000 square foot indoor practice facility, which accommodates a wide range of varsity, club, intramural and recreational activities.

Designed to meet the University’s need for an all-season space for practice and training, the facility also allows Brown to grow undergraduate participation in recreation and create more space for wellness activities that will enhance the student experience.

Hideo Sasaki was one of the most consequential designers and educators of the twentieth century—his influence lives on in the halls of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where he studied and taught, in the work of the firm he founded, and in the mission of the Hideo Sasaki Foundation.

In 1988, five years after Hideo retired, his former student and business partner Richard (Dick) Galehouse sat down with his mentor for a wide-ranging conversation that would later form the basis of Dick’s book, Hideo Sasaki: A Legacy of Collaborative Design. The interview survived as a transcript for decades—until the original microcassette was able to be digitized last year with the help of the Northeast Document Conservation Center. For most of the firm, this was the first time we heard our founder and namesake speak in his own words.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, we’re sharing a glimpse of the man behind the name. This is part of ongoing work with the Sasaki Archives to surface and preserve his life and legacy. In this excerpt, Hideo reflects on the role of the designer.

Yesterday, Bates College celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Stoddard Fitness and Well-Being Center.

“This facility will be transformative in strengthening Bates’ commitment to overall student well-being,” Bates College President Garry W. Jenkins said in announcing the project in March. “Our goal of a new center to support our students as they pursue their personal health and fitness goals is within reach.”

The new facility is designed to serve the entire Bates community, from varsity athletes to students finding their fitness footing. Bridging the existing Alumni Gym and the Gray Athletic Building, the center will double the College’s available fitness space and open up onto the heart of campus at Ladd Library Quad. The Stoddard Center will feature a variety of spaces, including second-floor yoga and pilates studio, new coaching offices, locker rooms, and dedicated well-being spaces.

What’s the role of sketching in landscape architecture? ✍

At this year’s edition of , Sasaki designer Juan Perez and landscape architect Ian Scherling presented “Radical Cross-Pollination: Sketching as Shared Language,” encouraging students to rethink what a “good” sketch can look like and what it can do.

Situated between The Lawrenceville School’s museum space and visual arts studios, the Gruss Center for Art and Design (GCAD) is a contemporary makerspace that bridges academic programs.

The building creates a new level of transparency into campus activity, balancing the masonry of the existing buildings with glass and steel. Through its open sightlines and collaboration spaces, GCAD underscores the value of connection and curiosity in the creative process.

Learn more about the inspiration and vision behind this flexible, innovative space from Sasaki associate principal and project lead Marta Guerra-Pastrián in our latest project deep-dive.

Ten years ago, the Bruce C. Bolling Building opened its doors in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, marking a new chapter for Nubian Square. The project brought together the City of Boston, Sasaki, and Mecanoo to design a new type of civic space—one that brought Boston Public Schools administration under one roof, merging dedicated community spaces and ground floor retail in the geographic heart of the city.

To celebrate this anniversary, Sasaki principal Victor Vizgaitis sat down with Boston’s Chief of Planning, Kairos Shen, to reflect on the project’s journey from early vision to reality and its lasting influence on the community today.

The Lawrenceville School’s Tsai Field House was recently honored by AIA New England with a Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture. 🏆

The project is a contemporary interpretation of existing structures on the historic campus, articulated as a sequence of pavilions with undulating rooflines and lofting interior spaces. It translates The Lawrenceville School’s Harkness method of teaching and learning – a discussion-based approach in which students are empowered to think critically, ask informed questions, and collaborate deeply — into architectural form.

Inspired by the School’s philosophy of nurturing the intellectual, physical, and emotional growth of its students, Sasaki designed Tsai Field House to place wellness at the center of the student experience. The building merges dining, fitness, and community programming into one interconnected environment. Its design embraces topography, setting larger venues like the pool, ice arena, and gymnasium at a lower plateau to lend the appropriate scale.

Tsai Field House reflects Lawrenceville’s mission of inspiring the best in each to seek the best for all while uniting the campus community across all aspects of School life.
