Machado Silvetti

Machado Silvetti A full-service, internationally recognized and accomplished, architecture, urban design and planning firm. A second office was opened in Buenos Aires in 2008.

Machado Silvetti is an architecture and urban design firm known for distinctive spaces and unique works of architecture in the United States and abroad. These projects result from an integration of the client’s aspirations, the program’s potential, and the culture and character of the place for which we design. The firm was founded in 1985 by Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti and in 1991 was give

n the first ever Award in Architecture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters for twenty years for “boldly conceived and brilliantly executed projects” and for being "uncompromisingly dedicated to envisioning a meaningful architecture of the public realm." Since the founding our dedication to quality in design, execution and service has earned the firm international recognition and numerous industry awards. And in 2015 the firm added three new partners: Jeffry Burchard, Ned Goodell and Stephanie Randazzo Dwyer. The firm’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its organization and structure. At a time when many firms are specializing or growing to unprecedented size, Machado Silvetti continues to innovate as a small firm, offering the personal involvement of its principals in every commission, from initial concept to construction detail. The office has received three National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects, twelve Progressive Architecture awards and citations, fourteen design awards from the New England AIA chapter, numerous Boston Society of Architects awards, including the 2003 Harleston Parker Medal and the prestigious International Award for Architecture in Stone. Most recently, Founding Principal Jorge Silvetti was the individual recipient of the 2018 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Architectural Education. The firm's designs have been extensively published in professional magazines and displayed in numerous exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Latin America, most notably at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Biennale di Venezia, at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., the 1984 I.B.A. Exhibition in Berlin, and at the XVII Triennale di Milano. Three monographs have been produced on the office, Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti: Buildings for Cities (1990), Casas 40: Rodolfo Machado & Jorge Silvetti (1995), and Unprecedented Realism: The Architecture of Machado and Silvetti (1995).

At the Honan Alston Branch of the Public Library in Allston, Massachusetts, we reconceived of a new civic architecture. Three parallel zones—active, meditative, communal—orchestrate the everyday ritual of reading. Where industrial land becomes gathering place, slate and light compose a public library that earns its honors through clarity of purpose. The project was awarded the 2003 National Honor Award for Architecture.

Machado Silvetti’s latest building is aanother parking structure that refuses anonymity—brick and terracotta meet Downtown Cary’s streetscape, bronze chevrons animate the facade, and an ivory-colored spiral stair tower establishes a presence. The gains not just parking, but a building that reinforces human scale and urban vitality; architecture in service of place.

Sited on original WTC excavation landfill, Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park in Battery Park City, New Yor rose to embrace the harbor, the Statue of Liberty, the harbor’s memory. Postmodern colossus rendered intimate. Brick pavilions frame the city from within itself—design that acknowledges colossal surroundings while reserving the plaza for the public alone. Winner of the 1998 AIA National Honor Award for Urban Design the Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park in Battery Park City, New York was designed by in partnership with and was critiqued by in the saying: “What is most important is that every aspect of this design emerges from the realities of the park’s surroundings—the waterfront, the Statue of Liberty, the rest of Battery Park City and lower Manhattan—and connects to the imperatives of human use.”

Winner of the 1993 Award for Architecture – a first for Machado Silvetti - the Science and Engineering Quadrangle Parking Structure at University in Princeton, New Jersey is a garage elevated to monument. We asked: what if functional necessity became an exercise in contextual discipline? 410 cars concealed by bronze lattice and masonry—architectural rigor?

We are so thrilled by the Architect’s Newspaper’s incredible coverage of our recent leadership transition news. Yesterday, we announced that Jorge Silvetti and Rodolfo Machado were stepping back after forty years of firm leadership, and that Stephanie Randazzo Dwyer and Jeffry Burchard are the new owners and firm leaders. As Kristine Klein writes, “The Boston-based firm has established itself as a forerunner in adaptive reuse and building in historic contexts, having amassed a robust portfolio of museum, educational, and cultural projects. New leadership will remain active in the realms of architectural education, practice, and technology, as was the case for Machado Silvetti in years past.”

As we embark on this new era, we remain delighted by and grateful for our many partners, valued friends and colleagues, and collaborators.

Construction continues on Downtown Cary Park a seven-acre, centerpiece collaboration between the Town of Cary, OJB Landscape Architecture, Machado Silvetti, and a host of consultants, community members, and the town’s council and manager’s office. Set within the highly programmed park, the five Machado Silvetti-designed pavilions were conceived in close collaboration with OJB to ensure the seamless correspondence of inside and out, building and landscape.
