Black represents the Water element in Classical Feng Shui. It is associated with intuition, reflection and flow. You can bring it into a room through artwork, a dark accent wall or a few accessories, you don’t need an all-black space.
In a bedroom, I’d use it with care. A large amount of Water can feel too active for a room meant for rest, and the right choice depends on the whole space.

Purple offers an expressive way to introduce the Fire element. It can bring warmth, joy and passion to a space.

You don’t need an entirely purple room. A few intentional touches through flowers, art, textiles or accessories, can introduce its color and energy.

Red is a strong, intense expression of the Fire element.

In Chinese culture, red is considered auspicious and is used in joyful celebrations. In interiors, even a small amount can make a bold statement through art, flowers, textiles or accessories.

In Classical Feng Shui, placement matters, Fire is not supportive everywhere.

In Feng Shui, color is one way to introduce the 5 Elements into our homes.

Red, pink and purple are associated with the Fire element, representing warmth, vitality and energy. Pink offers a softer expression of Fire, bringing warmth and joy without the same intensity of red.

Art, textiles, fresh flowers and decorative details can all introduce Fire through thoughtful placement. Sometimes a small shift can change how a space feels.

Historic house tours are one of my favorite ways to explore interior design and find inspiration. When I attended the New York School of Interior Design, visiting historic homes was part of the curriculum.

We are fortunate to have so many historic houses throughout New England.

Last year, I participated in the Hingham Historic House Tour through the Hingham Historical Society, representing my garden club as a floral designer. My assignment was to create an arrangement inspired by the pink and white china and yellow wallpaper in the dining room of the Benjamin Lincoln House.

I’m looking forward to participating again on September 27th for the 100th Hingham Historic House Tour, a wonderful celebration of local history, architecture, and design.
