Spontaneous combustion is NOT an urban myth.

I always drown my rags in a water bucket at the end of the day, but about 6 hours into today, I smelled a smell that said "you burned out the belt on your drum sander". Nope.

Right next to me, a 5 gallon bucket with several test pieces of wood soaked in Danish oil had met some dry crumpled disposable shop towels and it somehow caught fire.

Thankfully, our shop is properly equipped with appropriate fire extinguishers!

I had never used one before, so it took me a solid 10 seconds to figure out how to release it from the strap on the wall and break the zip tie holding the pin secure.

So, my best advice is to USE ONE BEFORE YOU NEED IT!

Lucky for me, there were only a few small pieces of wood soaked in Danish oil and 4 or 5 crumpled shop towels in the bucket. So, there wasn't much fuel. My trash buckets are also kept at least 3 feet away from walls and any other combustible materials.

Fire safety needs to stay at the top of every woodworker's mind!

It smells like cotton candy and burnt hair in here...

Made my 87 year old dad a Christmas present
He was a cabinet maker. I worked in IT but started woodworking as a hobby. He tried to teach me when I was a kid and this is the first lesson we all learn

A really fun bookshelf! Species: walnut, sapele, curly maple, hard maple, and cherry.
The book supports are made from 1/4 Lexan, which is the easiest plexi to cut (in my opinion).
