These stairs are absolutely striking. The contrast between the dark stained treads and the soft textured risers feels very high-end modern coastal — almost a boutique hotel vibe.
A few things that really work here:
—The thick square-edge treads give it a very architectural, floating feel
—The subtle texture on the risers keeps the white from looking flat or builder-basic
—The clean side skirts with no heavy trim keep the entire staircase minimal and sophisticated
—The proportions are excellent — the wider lower treads make the entry feel grand without being fussy
The black stain reads softer than a true painted black, which is smart. It has depth and warmth instead of looking harsh. It actually reminds me of the kind of detailing you’d see in a modern Palm Beach or West Coast contemporary home.
One thing I especially like as a designer detail:
the riser texture adds just enough movement so fingerprints/scuffs won’t show nearly as badly as a smooth painted riser would.
Here you can see we’ve leaned into:
—very minimal railing detailing
—oversized sculptural chandelier
—limewash or soft matte walls
—warm brass or bronze accents nearby
—a runner only if acoustics become an issue (because visually these are beautiful exposed)
Honestly, this is the type of staircase people stop and photograph.
